šŸ”” NEW APPEAL – AND A LOCAL MYSTERY! šŸ””

The Friends of St. Michael’s, working alongside the
Churches Conservation Trust are launching an exciting new fundraiser: The Longstanton St. Michael’s Bellcote Fund.

This appeal will help fund the inspection, repair, and restoration of the church’s bellcote… but here’s the twist…

There are no bells. šŸ‘€

Back in 1969, the village woke up to discover that the two bells had vanished overnight. Not exactly an easy job when you consider their size, weight, and the height they were perched at! Even more incredible? Not a single person saw or heard a thing.

So where did they go? šŸ¤”
It’s a mystery that’s been puzzling locals for decades—and now we’re shining a spotlight on it while helping preserve an important piece of our village history.

Alongside our usual events, we’ve also made it even easier to support the cause through easyfundraising.org.uk—meaning you can help raise money at no extra cost to you just by shopping online.

šŸ‘‰ Follow the link below to sign up and support us—it really does make a difference!

Let’s come together as a community, protect our heritage, and maybe… just maybe… uncover the truth about those missing bells šŸ”šŸ””

šŸ‘Heartfelt appreciation post incoming!šŸ‘

Please join us in saying a massive thank you to our star bakers Anne, Judith and Elaine who are retiring from the Community Cafe All Saints' Church, Longstanton after almost 2 years. Their efforts and dedication have raised almost £700 in the last year alone; a tremendous result and one in which we are so very thankful.

Can you help?

We are now looking for new volunteers to take up the baton. Are you a keen baker and can you help? We need people to be able to help out at the Community Cafe at All Saints' Church, Longstanton on the first Wednesday of every month from 9.30 - 12.30. Even if you are not into baking, just having a list of willing volunteers will really help us out.

Get in touch by email if you can help or if you would like to know more [email protected]

A Small Church with a Global reach!

As you know, St. Michael’s church is situated in a quiet corner of the old parish of St. Michael’s, Longstanton. The relevance of our small thatched building at the end of the village is often underestimated by local residents. Despite this, the visitor’s book indicates a different story.

Linked to St. James the Less in Philadelphia, not by happenstance but literally by design, this church has a place in the consciousness of a parish and school in the United States. It is this link which gives us a feeling of great pride.

This year alone, we have welcomed three different sets of visitors - staff and friends associated with St. James the Less School - all on their independent pilgrimages to see their ā€˜mother church’. This term was coined by a previous visitor and it seems so apt.

Pictured are Kevin Todd and Sarah Carroll who visited in August, both staff members of St. James the Less and also John Hager and his friend Lachlan who visited in July. John is the author of the booklet shown, which features St Michael’s…

In 2024, we also welcomed visitors from this school who came out of their way to see this unassuming building. There is a much longer list of US visitors from Philadelphia over the previous decade.

As one of the local residents helping to maintain this rare gem, it has been heartwarming to watch the enthusiasm shown for a church so often overlooked by its local community. It really can be a matter of underestimating what is on your doorstep.

The efforts of the Friends of St Michael’s, and the guardians of the church, the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT), have helped protect this historic building. Sadly, there remains much to be done to help preserve the structure of the church, the churchyard and the very special baptismal well. Our fundraising for protecting St. Michael’s continues.

Along with the maintenance needs, the CCT and Friends also provide different events to showcase St. Michael’s as a place to be used for the enjoyment of the local community.

If you are yet to attend an event do look for our posters around the village!

Even better, consider joining us in our efforts to keep the history of Longstanton and St. Michael’s alive.
