Reserve Forces Day 2026

Our second Reservist CFAV is PO Richard. PO Richard is again a serving Reservist in HMS Sherwood and a member of the UK Maritime Trade Organisation (UKMTO). UKMTO is worldwide organisation that provides intelligence updates and support to Ships Masters about Piracy hotspots around the globe.

When not in Sherwood supporting fellow Reservists, PO Richard is either taking part in Continuous development training or on Major Exercises in the UK or globally.

In Sea Cadets PO Richard brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise encompassing leadership and management techniques that he delivers to our Cadets. Outside of the Reserves and Sea Cadets, PO Richard works for the NHS.

Reserve Forces Day 2026

Today is Reserve Forces Day and we are lucky to have members of the Royal Naval Reserve volunteering as staff in Long Eaton Sea Cadets.

Our Unit Training Officer is a serving Reservist in HMS Sherwood, and part of the Maritime Reserves Training Branch. PO Andy is heavily involved in Phase 1 Officer Cadet and Recruit Training at both BRNC Dartmouth and HMS Raleigh. Alongside his Reserves and CFAV role, PO Andy also holds down a busy civilian job with Nottingham City Transport in the Service Control Room. As a Reservist, PO Andy brings a wealth of experience and skills that benefit our Staff and Cadets.

We often wonder how he finds the time to juggle his busy life and support our Staff and Cadets in dealing with their challenges and training needs.

Winston Churchill once said: “a Reservist is twice the citizen.” In our case it’s three times the Citizen.

Some Sea Cadet History

The image below shows Sea Cadets at cutlass drill in 1922. This was intended to provide a naval education for boys who would then join the Royal Navy - an attempt to help tackle the pesky RN manning problems at the time.

The shortage of trained manpower for the Royal Navy during the Crimean War sparked a critical need for sea cadets, and training ship orphanages and training brigs cropped up across the British Isles...

In 1854, a vicar in Whitstable, Kent, returned from the Crimean War and founded an orphanage where sailors taught nautical skills to prepare orphans for future careers. Multiple similar orphanages were founded across the country, and the organisation became known as the Naval Lads' Brigade. In 1899 Queen Victoria presented £10 (equivalent to £1,670 in 2026) to the Windsor Unit to purchase uniforms.

In 1910, the Navy League sponsored a small number of units as the Navy League Boys' Naval Brigade, and in 1919 the organisation adopted the name Navy League Sea Cadet Corps. In 1937, Lord Nuffield donated £50,000 (equivalent to £4.42 million in 2026) to fund an expansion of the Corps.

King George VI became the Admiral of the Corps in 1942 and the name was changed to the Sea Cadet Corps. The Sea Cadets had approximately 400 units and 50,000 Cadets. The Girls Naval Training Corps was also formed (later renamed Girls Nautical Training Corps in 1950). Queen Elizabeth II became the Patron of the Sea Cadets in 1952. In 1955 the Sea Cadet Council agreed to the formation of the Marine Cadet Section. The Girls Nautical Training Corps became affiliated with the Sea Cadet Corps in 1963. The Royal Naval Association began planning the first British colonial unit in Bermuda in 1964, with TS Bermuda formed on 12 January 1966. Located at Admiralty House, Bermuda, it was followed by two further units (TS Venture at the former Roman Catholic chapel of the Royal Naval Dockyard, Bermuda and TS Admiral Somers at Convict Bay, St. George's, another former Admiralty property).

On 31 March 1980 the Ministry of Defence approved the admission of girls into the Sea Cadet Corps, which took place slowly at first but spread across the UK over the preceding decade. The successful integration of girls into the Sea Cadet Corps led to the dissolution of the Girls Nautical Training Corps in 1992.

Today in combination with the Voluntary Cadet Corps, and Combined Cadet Corps (RN and RM sections), and RN approved Sea Cadet Units, there are well over 100,000 members of the Royal Naval Cadets & Youth (inc RN approved Sea Scouts).

Walk of Remembrance

2 staff and 3 cadets of Long Eaton Sea Cadets joined Sea Cadets and Royal Marine Cadets from Nottingham Sea Cadets, Chesterfield Sea Cadets & Royal Marines Cadets and Royal British Legion - Derbyshire for a walk to remember the 4000 Sailors, Soldiers and civilians who lost their lives during Operation Aerial on 17 June 1940.

The walk began with a service of commemoration in Melbourne Derbyshire, where a memorial was unveiled to all those who lost their lives in HMT Lancastria, a troopship that was involved in the evacuation of France. Many of the Soldiers who perished came from the Sherwood Foresters Regiment.

On the walk, all the Cadets dug deep and completed the 18 miles from Melbourne to Mickleover RBL in approximately 8 hours.

Bravo Zulu to all who have taken part in this amazing feat of grit and determination to complete those very warm and humid 18 miles.
