📌 This week’s Editors’ Pick!

🧠“Safety concerns reported by coroners following fentanyl patch fatalities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland between 1997 and 2024” by Eman Mshari, Caroline S. Copeland and Georgia C. Richards.

Fentanyl patches are widely used to manage severe pain, but their potency means that incorrect use can lead to serious harm. In this study, the authors investigate fentanyl patch-related deaths reported by coroners in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, identifying recurring safety concerns and areas where further improvements may be needed.

The article highlights issues relating to patch use, administration and prescribing practices, and explores how these factors have contributed to preventable fatalities. The findings emphasise the importance of safe prescribing, patient education and ongoing vigilance when using fentanyl patches in clinical practice.
