Formed in January 1995 when the Union of Communication Workers joined forces with the National Communications Union, we represent members in postal, telecom, mobile, administrative and financial companies including Royal Mail Group, UK Mail and BT, Telefonica O2, Virgin Media, EE and Santander, as well as outsourcing company Capita. Our members' expertise includes engineering, computing, clerical, mechanical, driving, retail, financial, call centre and manual skills. The CWU's statement of values:

To provide first class collective and individual representation for all CWU members;
To achieve security of employment for all members;
To offer individual membership services of the highest quality;
To expand trade union membership throughout the communications industry;
To promote, by industrial and political means, the success of the industries in which our members work;

these cuts won’t impact on frontline workers and no compulsory redundancies are involved.

But they will impact around 200 CWU members in administration and revenue protection, and we’ll be fighting for them.

This is another demoralising story about the state of Royal Mail, a national institution in urgent need of a new vision - and serious government intervention.

Commenting on the announcement Royal Mail will be cutting 2,500 jobs as part of an organisational review Martin Walsh, Deputy General Secretary (Postal), Communication Workers Union (CWU) said:

‘Despite the union being reassured that this announcement will not impact any frontline workers, and will involve no compulsory redundancies, these proposals will impact approximately 200 CWU-represented jobs in administration and revenue protection.

‘We will be meeting management to discuss this announcement, which is further evidence of a company that is demoralising staff and failing to deliver for customers and the wider community.

‘We urge the government to confront the reality of a collapsing Royal Mail and intervene to save this national institution.’

Commenting on Citizens Advice report into the working and payment conditions of parcel delivery drivers Dave Ward, General Secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) said:

“CWU strongly welcomes this report and its finding that the pay and employment conditions of the workforce in the parcel industry have a significant impact on the quality of service for consumers. The analysis confirms what the union has argued for many years primarily that bogus self-employment in the sector has been hugely detrimental for workers in terms of pressure and stress. Citizens Advice is right to call on the Government to implement a single status of worker in the parcel market and to ensure that the status can be enforced.”
