Over the years, we've heard from many bereaved pupils that attending school can be a challenge.
👉 They can find it difficult to be in school when they're worried about someone seriously ill
👉 They need time off in the aftermath of a death and as they prepare for the funeral
👉 They can be very anxious about how school will manage their return - will people know? What will people say? What if they get overwhelmed in class?
👉 Anniversaries and dates such as inquests can be very challenging
👉 Their feelings can be overwhelming to manage in school
So ... we want to know more. And we want ideas about how this could be improved.
This is all about , so we've launched a survey to understand more about how pupil and student absences related to bereavement are currently recorded, monitored, and understood within schools and other education settings.
We've set up a short survey to help identify
✅ current practices
✅challenges
✅potential areas for improvement.
If you work in an education setting or a bereavement service, are a bereaved young person aged 16+ or a parent or carer, please complete the short survey by 12 December 2025. We really want to hear from you.
