The American Institute of Architects UK Chapter is pleased to announce its 2024 Design Awards. For 30 years, these awards, which do not require AIA membership to enter, have proven highly valued by architects as they confer international recognition for design excellence. Submit your design now.

The awards programme recognises and honours excellence in design in three categories:

•Professional (submissions further categorised into Small, Medium & Large projects)

•Emerging Practice

•Sustainability

Submission and entry deadline: Friday 26th April, 2024

Further category terms:

• Professional: Entries are sought from architects, industrial designers, urban planners, landscape architects, and interior designers for projects whose construction has been completed within the last three years (2021-2023).

• Emerging Practice: Entries are sought from young, emerging architects, industrial designers, urban planners, landscape architects, and interior designers whose practices are made up of design principals under 40 years of age, for projects whose construction has been completed within the last three years (2021-2023).

• Sustainability: We launched this award in 2020 as part of the worldwide call to action on climate change and carbon reduction. This award seeks to commend projects that demonstrate creative and effective sustainable designs, whose construction has been completed within the last three years (2021-2023).

Description

Prof Coley will take an honest look into why things don’t seem to turn out the way architects want them to, be it the take up of a new refugee shelter design, or a low energy building. He will then hint at a possible solution: the art of gentle calculation.

Speaker Bio

David Coley is Professor of Zero Carbon Design at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, University of Bath, UK. He trained as a theoretical physicist before turning to the built environment. He has conducted research on buildings for many decades, with over 150 papers published in international journals. His teaching and consultancy activities revolve around building physics, energy and climate change. As part of this he got involved in the design of unconditioned buildings and this led to the design of the UK’s first zero carbon school. Then to the design of unconditioned refugee accommodation around the world. As part of this, he was leader of the Healthy Housing for the Displaced project funded by EPSRC. Of late he has been thinking about why modern buildings seem to use the same amount of energy as old ones, and how simple tools for professionals and students might help get a design off to a low energy start and help keep it there.

Opportunities and actions for architects will be evident in this presentation.

Over the past century, cultural destruction has wrought catastrophic results across the globe. This war against culture is not over - it's been steadily increasing. The push to protect, salvage and rebuild has moved in step with the destruction.Legislation and policy have played a role, but heroic individuals have fought back, risking and losing their lives to protect not just other human beings, but our cultural identity - to save the record of who we are.Based on the book of the same name by Robert Bevan, The Destruction of Memory tells the whole story - looking not just at the ongoing actions in Syria and other contemporary situations, but revealing the decisions of the past that allowed the issue to remain hidden in the shadows for so many years.Interviewees in the film include the Director-General of UNESCO, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, as well as diverse and distinguished international experts, whose voices combine to address this urgent issue.

The 2023 AIA/RIBA Keynote Lecture features Thom Mayne of Morphosis.

The lecture is jointly hosted by the American Institute of Architects UK (AIA) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The AIA and RIBA have a long-history of collaboration that dates from the founding of their institutes in 1857 and 1834 respectively.

This event is being held in person with drinks and canapes to be served after the lecture.

AIA UK is excited to announce an in-person tour of the U.S. Embassy by KieranTimberlake!

Description

The US Embassy building at Nine Elms, designed by KieranTimberlake, is a translucent crystalline cube that gives form to core democratic values of transparency, openness, and equality. Its unique façade affords generous natural light throughout the interior and takes advantage of the site’s striking views.

The high-performance façade uses laminated glazing with an outer envelope of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene. The envelope prevents excessive solar gain and mitigates glare while uniformly distributing daylight throughout the building. This reduces the energy required to cool and light the building.

Each of the interior gardens is inspired by a different region of the United States, including the Canyonlands, the Gulf Coast, the Midwest, the Potomac River Valley, the Pacific Forest, and the Mid-Atlantic.

Sustainability is a hallmark of the Embassy. With environmental initiatives including brownfield redevelopment, natural habitat creation, healthy and responsibly sourced building materials, and energy efficient equipment, the project received LEED Gold and BREAM Outstanding ratings.

Following the tour, attendees are invited to join us for drinks at the embassy pub!
