This October, we’re celebrating the strength, achievements, independence, and unique perspectives of people who are blind or visually impaired.

Blindness Awareness Month is also an opportunity to challenge misconceptions, promote accessibility and inclusion, and listen to and amplify the voices of the blind and visually impaired community. 🌟

Last week, Silvia joined more than 100 members of the rare disease community at Genetic Alliance UK’s Future for Rare Summit. 💚

The Summit brought together people living with rare conditions, patient organizations, clinicians, researchers, and policymakers from across the UK to help shape what comes next for UK rare disease policy.

For Silvia, the day was also an important reminder of why patient voices must remain at the heart of these conversations. Progress in rare disease can be frustratingly slow — but that makes coming together as a community, defining what we want to achieve, making clear asks and pushing for accountability all the more important.

At Eyes on the Future, we know that meaningful change doesn’t happen overnight. It happens when patients, families, researchers, clinicians, advocates, and policymakers work together — and keep pushing. 💪

Thank you to Genetic Alliance UK and its partners for bringing the rare community together and creating space for these important conversations.

💡Did you know?

Your retina is actually an extension of your brain. 🧠

The retina is a thin layer of light-sensitive neural tissue at the back of the eye. When light enters the eye, specialized retinal cells convert it into electrical signals that travel along the optic nerve to the brain, where they are interpreted as the images we see.

In inherited retinal diseases like RDH12-related retinopathy, changes in genes that are important to retinal cells can interfere with this incredibly complex process — and, over time, lead to vision loss.

It’s one reason retinal research is so fascinating: scientists aren’t simply studying the eye. They’re studying part of the nervous system.

🔬 Every discovery helps researchers better understand how to protect, preserve and potentially restore vision.

Vicky wrapped up another amazing summer with a trip to Italy. While there, she filled her visual memory with many different experiences, including a kayak trip by moonlight. 🌝🇮🇹

May we all be like Vicky and learn the importance of taking a moment to slow down and truly appreciate the beauty all around us.

🎒✏️ And just like that… Elin is a KINDERGARTNER! 💖

Last week, Elin headed off for her first day of Kindergarten — Rapunzel backpack and lunchbox in tow! Right now, her favorite parts of the day are Writer’s Workshop and recess 😉, and she wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up! 🐾🩺

Here’s to a year filled with new friendships and lots of learning! 🌟

This summer, Cecilia “Ceci” Cole was featured in Sidelines magazine, an equestrian lifestyle magazine devoted to the people and personalities that make the horse world exciting. In the article, Ceci opened up about her journey as an equestrian who also has a visual impairment due to a genetic mutation on the RDH12 gene. 🏇

“One thing that really helped me was that I was a very bold and confident young rider from the beginning. I wasn’t afraid to try new things, go a little faster or jump bigger fences when my trainer asked. I’ve always trusted the horses I’ve been able to ride, and I think that confidence played a big role in my progress.”

Ceci is a rising junior and Equine Studies student at Centenary University in New Jersey. She is also on the school’s Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association team, the school’s Hunter/Jumper team, and serves as a marketing and editorial intern for Sidelines Magazine. Upon graduating, she plans to combine her passion for writing and media with her love of the equestrian industry. We can’t wait to see all that she accomplishes! 🌟

🏊‍♀️ Busy couple of weeks for Vicky!

She competed at both the Aquatics Great Britain Next Gen Championships and the Swim England National Championships as an S12 visually impaired swimmer.

We’re so proud that she made the final in all 7 of her races, achieved several personal bests, and loved racing alongside so many amazing para-athletes.

So proud of you, Vicky. Keep chasing your dreams! 💙
