Opinium conducted a survey on behalf of CAWF exploring UK public attitudes towards farm animal welfare and a range of related policy proposals. Fieldwork was conducted among 2,050 UK adults in June 2026.
Key findings include -87% agree that it is important to protect the welfare of farmed animals in the UK. Levels of agreement are similar across political parties. The findings reveal strong cross-party support and show why animal welfare should form part of confident political leadership.

Protecting farmed animals matters. Political leaders should now show that it matters to them too:

This we look back at our 2022 report by Dr Rob Atkinson and Dr Keith Lindsay, examining the needs of elephants in captivity. Supported by 90+ references and endorsed by 25 leading specialists, the report explains why expansive, diverse habitats are critical to keeping captive elephants physically and psychologically healthy.

The authors conclude that elephants cannot lead completely meaningful lives in captivity, given the enforced restrictions on their dynamic and complex behaviour, which requires both ample natural space and an
abundance of other elephants.

Quality space means that elephants can forage in natural, diverse vegetation, walk for miles each day, and exert a high degree of control over their social interactions. They suffer in zoos psychologically and physically because of the limits of what can be provided within such restricted environments. Most captive elephants spend their lives in enclosures no larger than a hectare – they can walk across them in little over a minute. We are delighted that the Welsh Government has responded to the Animal Law Foundation’s letter, which we were proud to sign, confirming it is aligned with DEFRA and that it is unacceptable to boil decapod crustaceans alive under the current law. It will now be working with DEFRA on welfare at the time of killing guidance.
This is an encouraging step towards strengthening protections for these sentient animals 🦀🦞
