Last week, ICCM president Lisa Parkes attended the National Community Wellbeing, Su***de & Bereavement Conference held in Cardiff.

Lisa said: "I had the pleasure of attending the White Rose Su***de, Bereavement and Community Wellbeing Event, hosted by White Rose Funerals and the Wales Working Together Steering Group.

"A huge thank you to Ahmed Alsisi from White Rose Funerals for organising such an inspiring and thought-provoking event. The programme featured a range of excellent speakers, including Emma Wools, Police Commissioner, Dr Joanne Hopkins from Trauma Informed Wales, Professor Jon Bisson from Cardiff University, and Steph Lotz from CONVO, who delivered a powerful presentation on bereavement from the perspective of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.

"One of the highlights for me was the Action Deafness workshop, where we had the opportunity to learn some British Sign Language (BSL). It was a valuable reminder of the importance of accessibility, inclusion and effective communication when supporting bereaved families and communities.

"It was a truly worthwhile day of shared learning, meaningful discussion and collaboration, demonstrating the positive impact that can be achieved when organisations come together to support community wellbeing."

Last week, we had two brilliant days at Pitkerro Grove Cemetery, Dundee City Council delivering the Cemetery Operatives Training Scheme (COTS).

The sky was blue, the views were lovely and the air was decidedly nippy, but the team were in great form! It was a real pleasure to spend time with them and see their enthusiasm for developing their knowledge and skills.

Martin Clark delivered the training calmly, knowledgeably and with a real ability to keep everyone engaged throughout. There was plenty of discussion and practical insight shared during our time together.

This City and Guilds-accredited course doesn’t just teach the job, it combines expert instruction, practical experience, and assessment against the ICCM’s Code of Safe Working Practice. COTS ensures that teams work efficiently, safely, and with the dignity bereaved people deserve.

A big thank you to everyone at Pitkerro Grove for making us so welcome. It was a pleasure to be there.

Baby Loss Awareness Week, which starts today, is a time to acknowledge the profound impact of pregnancy and baby loss.

For those working in cemeteries and crematoria, supporting bereaved parents may be part of your role, often at an incredibly difficult moment in their lives. But baby loss can also affect your own colleagues and employees, who may need understanding and support as they cope with their grief alongside their working lives.

Having the right knowledge can help teams feel better prepared to respond with care, sensitivity and compassion, whether supporting a family or a member of their own team.

Sands - baby loss charity and the ICCM have developed the Bereavement in the Workplace course to help delegates with that understanding.

It is not about having all the answers. It is about knowing how to listen, what to say, what not to say, and how to offer appropriate support when it matters.

This Baby Loss Awareness Week, it is worth taking a moment to think about how prepared your team is to support anyone affected by baby loss.

Do you work in a crematorium? The quality of care provided to families depends on more than what happens at the point of contact. Behind every cremation is a team of professionals who need the right knowledge and skills to carry out their roles safely, respectfully and in accordance with current legislation and guidance.

We offer a range of training and professional development opportunities for those working in crematorium services, including:

- Crematorium Technicians Training Scheme (CTTS)
CTTS is a nationally recognised qualification referenced in the Secretary of State’s Process Guidance Note for Crematoria and accredited by Pearson to BTEC standard. CTTS provides a comprehensive learning pathway covering the cremation process, safe charging procedures, identity integrity, health and safety, administration, environmental considerations and operational best practice.

- CTTS On-Site Refresher Course
Guidance, legislation and best practice continue to evolve. This half-day, on-site course helps crematorium teams stay current and confident, with updates including PG5/2(25), environmental permitting, emissions monitoring, auto-shutdown systems, prohibited coffin items and current best practice.

- CTTS Mentoring Sessions
Supporting the next generation of crematorium technicians is an important responsibility. Free monthly mentoring sessions provide current and prospective mentors with the opportunity to discuss responsibilities, legislative updates, course content and real-life scenarios with experienced CTTS Assessors.

- Crematorium Operations & Regulatory Compliance
Four-hour live online courses are available for both Scotland, and England and Wales, covering the legal and regulatory frameworks relevant to crematorium operations, including Death Certification Reform, the Medical Examiner system, statutory paperwork, environmental permits, management of ashes, health and safety and PG5/2(25).

For everyone working in bereavement services, keeping knowledge and skills up to date is part of maintaining public confidence and ensuring families receive a professional service at every stage.

We would like to invite all ICCM members to the next East Anglia Branch Meeting, which is being held on Tuesday 17th November 2026 at South Essex Crematorium, Corbets Tey, Upminster, Essex, RM14 2UY. Chelmsford City Council

Following the branch meeting, attendees will have the opportunity to take part in a guided tour of the crematorium and cemetery grounds, providing an insight into the history and development of the site, its facilities, and the services provided today.

Situated on Ockendon Road in the historic village of Corbets Tey, South Essex Crematorium has served families from Havering, Essex and the surrounding areas since opening in the mid-1950s. The site is set within mature landscaped grounds adjoining Corbets Tey Cemetery, creating a peaceful and dignified environment for remembrance.

The adjoining cemetery reflects the area's long history of serving local communities and contains a diverse range of memorials and burial areas set within attractive grounds. Together, the cemetery and crematorium plays an important role in supporting families across the wider South Essex and East London area.

This week, we're celebrating another couple of well-earned CTTS passes!

At Kingston Cemetery and Crematorium, an understandably happy Jake Colben-Porter successfully completed his CTTS assessment.

Also in the frame is Colin Binfield, who was previously a CTTS mentor at Putney Vale Crematorium, and mentored Jake through his CTTS. It’s always great to see experienced professionals continuing to support the development of colleagues across the sector.

There was another successful assessment at Oak Hill Lawn Cemetery and Crematorium, where Paul Brown passed his CTTS to a high standard. Paul was thorough throughout the assessment and demonstrated a strong understanding of the technical requirements.

A special mention to his mentor, Jim Steadman, for the support and guidance he provided throughout the process.

Congratulations to Jake and Paul, and thank you to Colin and Jim for their valuable contribution as mentors!

The CTTS isn’t just a qualification, it’s a mark of trust and technical excellence in the cremation profession. As a nationally-recognised course cited in the Secretary of State’s Process Guidance Note for Crematoria, it meets national standards and sets the benchmark for crematorium technician training across the UK.

About the role:
We currently operate two cemeteries, Little Trees Cemetery near Pease Pottage and Snell Hatch Cemetery, and 20 allotment sites throughout the town.

As Cemeteries and Allotments Assistant your main focus will be to support our Allotments Officer in the upkeep and maintenance of our 20 allotment sites. In addition, you will be working as part of a small team responsible for the day-to-day operation of both cemetery sites.

Duties at the allotment sites will include:
- strimming
- grass cutting
- clearance of plots
- repairs and maintenance within the communal areas
- meeting contractors for repairs or maintenance including compliance checks

Duties at the cemeteries will include:
- compassion for families and friends of the deceased
- marking out
- digging
- preparing and back-filling graves
- maintaining the high-quality landscaped grounds
Therefore, it would be advantageous if you have proven experience of using plant machinery, hedge cutters, strimmer and ride on mowers.

The role involves using hand and power tools, as well as operating a small 360 degree digger and dumper. The successful candidate will need experience of operating this equipment, relevant certification, or a willingness to undertake training and gain certification within six months of the agreed start date.

You will also need to be confident driving the allotment's tipper truck and trailer, training dependant. Our current fleet is 3.5 tonne Vauxhall Movano tipper with towing capability.

You will need to have very good verbal communication skills and a high degree of emotional intelligence and empathy to deal with customers and the public appropriately.

In return, we offer the exciting opportunity to be part of a dedicated team providing excellent cemetery and allotment provision, excellent working conditions and pension scheme.

You will need to be comfortable working alone and as part of a team when undertaking the daily duties.

There was huge value in joining others from across the funeral and bereavement secctor to share our knowledge, and ultimately work together for the benefit of the families we serve.
