Group 1 carcinogen” tells us how strong the evidence is that something can cause cancer - it doesn’t tell us how large the risk is.

A good example is processed meat. It sits in the same IARC Group 1 category as to***co and asbestos because there is sufficient evidence that processed meat can cause cancer. But IARC is explicit that this does not mean they are equally dangerous; the classification reflects the strength of the evidence, not the magnitude of the risk.

Context matters. Two things can both be proven carcinogens while carrying very different risks depending on what the exposure is, how much, how often and for how long.

So yes, sunbeds are a Group 1 carcinogen. But the words “Group 1” alone do not tell you the size of the risk.

The Department of Health and Social Care is currently consulting on proposed changes to commercial sunbed regulations in England.

With six key areas under review, this consultation could have a significant impact on the future of the tanning industry.

It is very important that you and your customers have your say. There is an established narrative around sunbed use that we need to continue challenging.

With the Government recently announcing that further regulations may be considered this Autumn, it is more important than ever to ensure our industry’s voice is heard.

We encourage everyone involved in or passionate about the industry to take part, share your views, and help shape the future of the industry.
