On Thursday 27th August (5.45pm – 7.45pm) Voice coach Matthew Collins is offering another Voice and Shakespeare workshop, Speak the Speeches, in Brompton Cemetery’s wonderfully-reverberant chapel.

During the workshop, Matthew will introduce the principles of voice work and use exercises to help participants explore their voices as they explore powerful speeches – from Romeo and Juliet; A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Julius Caesar; Henry V; and other plays.

The workshop is suitable for Matthew’s regular participants as well as for people who’ve never done voice work. It’s equally suitable for Shakespeare aficionados and for those who’ve never read a line of his poetry. Children over 12 are welcome – if accompanied by a parent.

This weekend at The Chapel: Halcyon Waves, an exhibition of drawings and paintings by artist Alia Bilgrami

Halcyon Waves is a special project by Alia Bilgrami dedicated to the memory of her father. Originating as a simple colouring book drawing, Bilgrami subconsciously filled the piece with elements her father loved, including water, birds, and flowers. For this iteration, she has transformed the original line drawing into a detailed contemporary miniature painting. This centrepiece is accompanied by larger floating watercolours positioned between the Chapel pillars, alongside personal memorabilia, including her father’s favourite poetry.

Site-specific to London’s Brompton Cemetery Chapel, the exhibition is located in the very neighbourhood where her father spent his youth, representing a full-circle moment for the artist. While deeply personal, the exhibition addresses universal experiences of grief, memory, loss and identity. Through this sacred space, Bilgrami invites visitors to heal together as a community, holding space for one another and exploring life through the eyes of a lost loved one.

Save the date for the Friends of Brompton Cemetery Open Day 🌱🌱🌱

Join us on Sunday 6 September, from 11am to 5pm, for a lively day in the Cemetery, with free admission and activities for all ages. Meet the birds of prey and Brompton bees, enjoy children’s storytelling and family activities, browse a wonderful mix of stalls, and stop for something delicious along the way.

There will also be guided walks exploring the Cemetery’s history, trees, plants, artists and inspirational women, alongside a rare opportunity to visit the atmospheric catacombs. Tour places are limited, so advance booking is recommended.

We would love to see you there!

We have some wonderful photographs from Susan Eyre’s exhibition, ‘Appearances Are a Glimpse of the Unseen’.

The images capture visitors encountering Susan’s innovative work in the unique setting of the Chapel, where the summer light and historic architecture frame an exploration of physics and abstract theories, as well as curiosity and the wonders of everyday life. Beautifully photographed by Emma

Susan Eyre works with print processes, sculpture, video and installation, and she enjoys creating imagery that emerges through translating ephemeral, unseen and subatomic realms to the visual. She is excited to discover things for herself through experiments and the use of simple technology. This might involve building a cloud chamber to reveal cosmic ray activity, using magnets to express energy fields, effecting chemical reactions such as copper patination, growing crystals under polarising filters to see how atoms and molecules arrange themselves in patterns, or stretching bubble membranes into very thin sheets to describe theories of higher dimensions.

A look back at 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘢𝘺, 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘕𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, presenting Qi Baiting’s work at the Chapel.

We had such a wonderful experience with Qi’s playful, vibrant world of the lost and the found. The installation presents viewers with an open-ended stage, inviting multiple ways of seeing and making connections and imaginations. At its core is an exploration of a universal energy that runs through all things, from a chair to a planet, from a handful of sand to the vastness of the universe.
