Our Story

Word Up was set up in June 2015 by Charlie and Laura De Courcy, with the aim of creating a spoken word night in Harlesden, giving back to artists and building a supportive, artistic community. The regular events drew 100 strong crowds and played host to incredible features including Desree, Poetcurious, Sophia Walker, Caleb Femi, Kat Francois and the Roundhouse Talking Doorsteps Collective. Thirty events, four venues, a book, three hundred videos and one baby later, they have decided to put the regular night on pause for now.

Word Up has spawned a thriving youtube channel with footage recorded by Andre LL and Black Superhero, sponsored by Thomas ‘Ghettogeek' Owoo, who also managed Word Up’s social media. It hosts all our videos, with over 50,000 views and serves as a catalogue of the spoken word scene in London over the years 2015-18.

In early 2016 Hannah Gordon came on board and set up the weekly writing group ‘Words Down’, which has been going strong for nearly three years, supporting and providing inspiration for writers, rappers, poets and playwrights. It is open to anyone with a desire to write and they meet at 7.30pm every Tuesday in Rubio, Harlesden.

As of 2020, we back having been awarded funding by Brent’s London Borough of Culture programme. Desree Gumbs-Carty is joining Hannah and Charlie to run 6 big live events, and six special workshops throughout the year.
