We’re finalists 🏆

We’re incredibly proud to announce that we have been named a finalist in the Patron’s Award for Charity Organisations at the BQF UK Excellence Awards 2026!

It’s a brilliant recognition of the work our team, coaches, partners and young people do every day to create more opportunities through sport.

We’ll find out if we’ve won at the awards ceremony at Wembley Stadium on 8 October… 🤞

Equal access to youth sport!

On 18 September, our CEO Matt Rostron will be speaking at Westminster Insight’s Equal Access to Youth Sport Conference in London.

At LYR, we know that the right opportunities can have a huge impact on young people — but not everyone has the same access to sport.

Matt will be joining a spotlight session on levelling the playing field for disadvantaged young people, exploring how we can broaden the sports offer and reach more young people through a wider range of physical activities.

It’s a really important conversation, and one we’re looking forward to being part of.

Active Row Thames Valley is officially on the water 🚣‍♀️
 
Yesterday, we welcomed young people to Reading Rowing Club for a day of trying new things, getting active and exploring everything the water has to offer.

From stand-up paddleboarding and rowing in a quad, to having a go in stable single sculls, there were plenty of opportunities to get on the water and build confidence.

Young people also worked with Thames Water 💧 on a problem-solving challenge, thinking about how we can move water from one place to another — putting their teamwork and creativity to the test.
 
With a brilliant team of LYR staff on hand throughout the day, and New Reach capturing plenty of the action, it was a fantastic way to kick off Active Row Thames Valley.
 
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the day happen and we can’t wait to see where this programme goes next.

A little throwback to a brilliant day on the water 🚣‍♀️

A few weeks ago, we welcomed for a rowing session with us.

It was great to see everyone getting involved, building confidence and enjoying time out on the water together.

Active Row Thames Valley isn’t just happening in schools!

Earlier this summer, we headed to the River Kennet for Reading Water Fest, giving people from the local community the chance to try rowing and find out more about what Active Row is all about.

And what a response we had!
🚣 51 young people had a go
💪 39 adults joined them
🌊 New connections were made with young people across Reading

We even had a visit from the Mayor of Reading, who shared his support for the programme and its role in helping young people get active and build confidence around the water.

Perhaps the best part? Young people were already asking when they could get rowing clubs started in their schools.

That’s exactly the kind of curiosity we love to see.

Summer on the water at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park ☀️

Our Open Club has been making the most of the sunshine, with young people continuing to build their skills and confidence on the water through kayaking and paddleboarding.

It’s fantastic to see the group returning week after week, developing their skills, learning from one another and growing in confidence as they take on new challenges.

Plenty of paddling, plenty of laughs and plenty of time spent on the water this summer!

Active Row Thames Valley is off to a brilliant start!

Since launching earlier this year, we’ve been working with five schools across the region, delivering 23 indoor rowing sessions and introducing around 250 young people to rowing.

We’ve seen young people returning week after week, improving their scores, challenging themselves and, in many cases, discovering a sport they hadn’t tried before.

And we’re only getting started. Two more schools will join the programme in September, with more schools already in conversation about getting involved.

It’s been fantastic to see the programme beginning to take shape, and we can’t wait to see what the next few months bring.
