Join us at The Geological Society Burlington House on Friday, 2nd October for our next free evening talk: Thirty years of discovery at the UK's largest dinosaur track site in North Oxfordshire by Professor Kirsty Edgar, University of Birmingham.

Non-members are welcome free of charge. The talk commences at 18.00 GMT and refreshments will be served beforehand in the Lower Library from 17.30 GMT and also afterwards.

The talk will also be broadcast simultaneously online via Zoom. To attend the meeting via Zoom, members and non-members should register in advance. Welcome to October 2026 with a striking picture of a Jurassic ammonite from Charmouth in Dorset taken by Phil James, which was Highly Commended in the GA 2025 Photographic Competition.

The fossil ammonite 𝘈𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘺𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘴 is embedded in a nodule from the Green Ammonite Beds of the Lower Lias at Charmouth. Collected and prepared by Phil James. The Jurassic fossils from the cliffs here are 190 million years old.

Closer to home this edition includes a report on two UK field meetings: one to Edinburgh in July to coincide with the tercentenary of the birth of James Hutton, the founder of modern geology. 2026 marks the fortieth anniversary of the Geologists' Association Curry Fund, which continues to provide financial support to a whole range of geology-related initiatives thanks to the legacy of Dennis Curry.

Thank you to Dr Liam Herringshaw (Fossiliam) and Professor Rebecca Williams () who led a walk around the historic streets of York on Tempests' Volcano Trail, following in the footsteps of pioneering Victorian polymath and amateur volcanologist Tempest Anderson.

Tempests' Volcano Trail was a project supported by the Geologists' Association Curry Fund and therefore made a very fitting way to round off an interesting and informative Conference weekend.

Thank you also to the Conference organising committee, in particular Paul Hildreth of Yorkshire Geological Society and David Harbourne from Yorkshire Philosophical Society, and to the other field trip leaders: John Hodgson and Peter Rawson.

We look forward to seeing you all at our 2027 Conference, which will take place in Kent and is being organised alongside Kent Downs National Landscape and Cross-Channel Geopark Transmanche. Further details will be made available in due course.
