🚨 NEU London Region on Strike

Today (Thursday 20 November), Unite members in London Region are on strike over a bullying culture, toxic management style and misogyny that is ruining lives.

“Too often I see my colleagues cry in the office”

In a survey responded to by an impressive 80% of all workers in London region, every single respondent - including managers - said they had either witnessed or been subjected to toxic management and bullying behaviour.

Unite have been calling for an external investigation into the culture that has resulted in an entire shutdown of the NEU’s headquarters in London.

“Withdraw your action — or else”

NEU management have threatened to withdraw from any investigations into bullying in the NEU London region while our members take part in industrial action - not exactly NEU policy when taking on an employer is it, Daniel?

Our members will not be blackmailed or pressurised this way.

You can support our courageous NEU Unite members by sending messages of solidarity, donating to the strike fund or joining their quiz night fundraiser, which will start at 6pm on Monday 24 November at the London Welsh Centre (157-163 Grays Inn Road, London WC1X 8UE). See link in comments.

NEU West Midlands Picket - Our Story

We're on strike as we are seriously concerned about the number of mobile caseworkers in the new structure.

We believe our colleagues will be overworked, and are fighting to prevent this.

We also strike in solidarity with colleagues in the Adviceline and Policy departments who deserve fair grading for the work that they do.

We do not want to be on strike, and we want to work with our union to implement new strategies to develop our activists. We hope that through negotiations we can make the NEU the most effective union!

NEU South West Office Picket - Our Story

We are fighting for protection against massive workloads for all staff and an increase in staff to do the job properly.

We are onboard with the NEU's strategic strategy but to make it a reality we need to be properly resourced.

More staff = more support for our activists and members.

We also stand in solidarity with staff who have been unjustly blocked from job evaluation and those who have had the decision to upgrade their band ignored.

We're on Strike tomorrow (Wednesday 5 November) - please support us:

Staff at the National Education Union (NEU) are to strike on 5 November over the impact on staff workloads caused by a poorly handled restructure, as well as unresolved issues around downgrading.

This sixth day of action follows strike days in July and September.

Workers at the NEU are members of the Unite trade union. While Unite reps have sought to reach agreement with the NEU, management has proved unwilling to compromise or offer a way forward on outstanding issues of staff downgrading.

At the same time, staff want firmer guarantees on workloads to remedy clearly identified issues around staff capacity.

Unite regional officer Zimeon Jones said: “Staff at the NEU work hard every day to improve and protect the pay and conditions of NEU members. In return, they expect NEU management to ensure this vital work continues without our members experiencing unduly heavy workloads or reduced frontline resources. We cannot stand by as colleagues are downgraded without any recourse.

“Our members have taken six days of industrial action since July in response to this unsatisfactory restructure. While we have managed to find solutions to some issues, there remain key areas in which management needs to retain an open mind for a resolution to be found. Our members want to reach an agreement that provides for a fair and effective NEU for all.”

Additionally, staff at the NEU’s London office are to take additional strike action on 12 and 20 November over allegations of bullying.

📢 Important Update on our dispute

We’re sorry to share that today’s all-members meeting has rejected the latest offer from the employer by a two-thirds majority.

As a result, we will be taking strike action on Wednesday 5 November.

This isn’t the outcome we wanted. We’re committed to resolving the issues and building a million-strong union. But we can’t move forward while our members are being left behind.

So what’s going wrong?

Let us explain:

🔹 AdviceLine Admin Staff

An independent panel evaluated these roles as Band 6. The employer didn’t like the result and was trying to re-run the process, citing “irregularities.” We have now received a proposal to remedy this.

☝️ We’re demanding they honour the original outcome and the commitment made to upgrade all admin colleagues from Band 7 to Band 6.

🔹 Policy Officer Roles

The employer is offering a vague, non-guaranteed job evaluation in January and is actively downgrading tasks.

☝️ We’re demanding a guaranteed job evaluation and proper consultation on job descriptions.

🔹 Regional Officer Representation

While discussions are happening, there’s still no commitment to increasing staffing. Some colleagues are delaying trial periods just to finish existing casework.

☝️ We need a firm commitment to increasing mobile-caseworker numbers where they are needed.

We wouldn’t accept this treatment for our NEU members — and we won’t accept it for ourselves.
Our members have already lost 6 days of pay, yet they remain united in solidarity with colleagues across teams and regions.

We’re ready to resolve this dispute. But we need an offer that the majority can support. That’s democracy — and every trade union worker deserves it.

✊ An injury to one is an injury to all.

🚨FORMER UNITE NEU BRANCH MEMBER ABDUCTED 🚨

Former NEU Unite Branch member, Ewa Jasiewicz, has been abducted less than 60 nautical miles off the coast of Gaza for doing nothing more than trying to break the illegal siege on Gaza and deliver life-saving humanitarian aid.

Policy Officers - why we had to strike

The canaries down our dispute coalmine are our Policy Officers, who work on equalities and education policy - surely important areas of work?

Over the past couple of years, these roles have been downgraded, in an attempt by department management to restructure by stealth.

Our branch raised a dispute over this back in 2023, and after years of management refusing to engage, our policy colleagues were told the restructure would provide the opportunity to resolve this dispute.

They were sold a lie.

They were denied meaningful consultation on their roles.

They were denied access to job evaluation panels held in secret.

They were physically denied access to the next set of job evaluation panels, being accosted in the corridor outside.

These are basic HR rights, and no one department manager should be able to prevent their staff from accessing HR procedures.

NEU Yorkshire & Humber Region – Why we went on strike

Unite members working in the Yorkshire and Humber region are concerned about the regions’ capacity to support the casework needs of our members under the new structure.

The number of mobile staff with some degree of casework responsibility in their job description is reducing from 9 to 5, with one of these roles being primarily managerial.

We fear this will put unmanageable workload demands on these colleagues and will have a direct impact on the service and support the region can provide to members and lay caseworkers.

Members also want to see fair grading for Office Managers, who play a vital and undervalued role ensuring regions run smoothly and other affected roles.

The overwhelming support and solidarity from our NEU activists in the region has been fantastic and we stand together in wanting to building an even stronger more influential NEU.
