Congratulations to Elaine Kelman on receiving an MBE. It has been a privilege to work with her throughout our partnership with The Michael Palin Centre for Stammering, and seeing her contributions recognised like this is truly special.

Congratulations to Elaine Kelman MBE!
We are incredibly proud to celebrate Elaine Kelman, retired Head of the Michael Palin Centre, on being awarded an MBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) on order of the King, in recognition of her outstanding service to children and families.
Throughout her remarkable career Elaine’s compassion, dedication and leadership has transformed the lives of countless children and adults who stammer, helping them find their voice, build confidence, and thrive.
This honour is a wonderful recognition of everything Elaine has given over her years with the NHS and the MPC. We feel very lucky to have worked alongside such an inspiring person and to share in this proud moment.
Please join us in congratulating Elaine on this fantastic and well-deserved achievement.
Elaine also shared her thoughts:
“I am so grateful for this award which is the icing on the cake for me following many years at the Michael Palin Centre. It was such a gift to see so many wonderful children who stammer flourish because of the expert support from the talented and dedicated team. I feel privileged to have been involved in such important, life-changing work and I am delighted that my award shines a light on all we did together.”

"Stammering happens when someone is nervous and lacking in confidence."

FALSE.

Stammering is not caused by anxiety, nervousness and shyness. There is a big difference between typical hesitations and difficulties getting words out when someone is feeling nervous, as opposed to someone who has a stammer. In fact, people who stammer often report that they became anxious as a reaction to worrying about stammering and sometimes from experiences of being teased but the stammer did not start because they were anxious.
