Eva & Sonu Foundation Our Story

The Eva & Sonu Foundation is dedicated to creating a healthier, more sustainable world by tackling climate change and social challenges together.

The Eva & Sonu Foundation develops innovative carbon projects that cut emissions, restore ecosystems, and improve lives — from clean cooking stoves in Myanmar to mangrove restoration, coral reefs, forests, and climate-resilient livelihoods. We develop innovative carbon projects that reduce emissions, restore ecosystems, and generate verified carbon credits — but our mission goes far beyond carbon.

From providing clean cooking stoves that save lives, to restoring mangrove and forest ecosystems, reviving coral reefs, reintroducing endangered wildlife, and building climate-resilient livelihoods, every project is designed to protect nature while improving the wellbeing of communities.

🌱 Carbon Project Developer
We design and implement high-quality carbon reduction and removal projects, certified by leading international standards. These projects not only generate verified carbon credits but also deliver co-benefits such as improved health, livelihoods, and biodiversity protection.

🔥 Myanmar Stoves Campaign
Our flagship clean cooking programme in Myanmar distributes fuel-efficient stoves that cut wood use by 50%, reduce air pollution by 80%, and lower household fuel costs. Certified under the Gold Standard, this project has issued hundreds of thousands of carbon credits. These Gold Standard VERs are available for sale, providing buyers with trusted, high-impact offsets.

🌊 Myanmar Mangrove Restoration
In partnership with Worldview International Foundation, we are restoring 1,000 hectares of mangrove forests across Myanmar. Mangroves sequester up to five times more carbon than terrestrial trees while protecting coastlines and supporting marine biodiversity. This project generates VCS-certified carbon credits that are available for sale.

🌳 Forest Restoration
Since 2011, we have planted millions of trees across Thailand, Mozambique, Nepal, and the Philippines. These long-term reforestation efforts restore biodiversity, improve community livelihoods, and “bank” carbon sequestration benefits for future generations.

🐠 Coral Restoration
Operating the largest coral farm in the Indian Ocean, our Coral Restoration Programme in the Maldives is pioneering coral spawning, micro-fragmentation, and reef rehabilitation. This work supports ocean biodiversity and the resilience of island communities.

🦜 Hornbill Reintroduction
Together with the Hornbill Research Foundation, we are reintroducing hornbills to Koh Kood in Thailand after 40 years of extinction, restoring this keystone species to its natural habitat.

👩🏽‍🌾 Action Against Hunger – Bangladesh
We partner with Action Against Hunger UK to build climate-resilient livelihoods in southern Bangladesh. Families are trained in organic farming, aquaculture, and small business development, tackling hunger and malnutrition while creating income opportunities.

♻️ Soneva Namoona – Maldives
Through Soneva Namoona, we support Maldivian islands to phase out single-use plastics, adopt sustainable waste management, and nurture a new generation of environmental stewards.

🌍 Our Vision
We believe in projects that finance themselves through carbon markets, reinvesting returns to expand impact. Every stove, tree, mangrove, coral, and restored habitat is a step toward a world where people and the planet thrive together.

“Trees are important because they inspire us.”

For Jossefa Pedro Faustino, a father living in Matica Sede, Mozambique, the disappearance of the forest meant more than lost trees — it meant lost stability. Without secure housing or income, life was a daily struggle.

In 2022, he joined our forest restoration effort with
and became part of the singling team — removing invasive species so native trees can thrive.

Today, Jossefa’s life has transformed:
🏠 He built a new house with a proper roof
💼 Started a small business
🍲 Can now provide food and stability for his family

“I love to work in the forest. It improves our breathing, gives us quality wood, and restores what we lost.”

💚 A forest reborn. A future regained.

In Myanmar, cooking shouldn’t cost lives — or forests.

Many families still rely on traditional open fires to cook their daily meals, spending up to 40% of their income on firewood. This not only drives deforestation but also exposes women and children to harmful indoor air pollution.

Our Myanmar Stoves Campaign offers a practical solution:

✅ Fuel-efficient stoves that use 50% less wood
✅ 80% reduction in indoor smoke
✅ Healthier families and protected forests
✅ Women-led income generation

🌿 The project is Gold Standard certified and generates VER carbon credits now available for purchase.

If your company is looking to offset emissions while supporting sustainable development, this is a solution with real social and environmental impact.

In the heart of Matica Sede, Mozambique, Matilde Augusto Oliveira saw the forest around her fade — trees cut for charcoal and firewood, the air hotter, the land drier.

“I’ve been a farmer my whole life,” she says. “I know how important the forest is. It gives us shade, helps with water, even provides fruit. But life was hard. I didn’t have a proper house or income.”

That changed when she joined the Eva & Sonu Foundation’s forest restoration project, implemented with Today, as a tree planter, Matilde helps bring life back to the forest.

🌱 “Since I started working, there are trees again. I even built a house and bought furniture. We’re living better now — and that means everything.”

Her favourites? Chanfuta, M’sara and Umbila — “strong, beautiful trees.”

💪 “I feel like a warrior against global warming.” — U Win Myaing, cookstove vendor in Baw Di Kone Village

When Ma Khin Myaing received her fuel-efficient stove, she immediately noticed the difference. Less wood. Less smoke. No more burning eyes or soot in the kitchen.

Her husband, U Win Myaing, was so inspired that he became a cookstove vendor.

🌱 Now he earns an income while helping fight deforestation and climate change in his community. He says, “Since we started using these stoves, the land is becoming green again.”

Together, they are helping shift rural Myanmar toward safer, more sustainable ways of cooking — one stove at a time.

📦 The project is implemented by Mercy Corps Myanmar and supported by Gold Standard certified carbon credits.

🌱 “I love planting trees. It gives me hope — and protects my village from future disasters.” – Ma Khine Thazin

When Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar in 2008, it left a trail of destruction across many coastal villages. But in Kyauktan Township, Ma Khine Thazin’s village was spared — shielded by a dense belt of mangrove forest.

“Without mangroves, other villages were badly hit by wind and waves. We were lucky – the trees saved us.”

Inspired by this, Ma Khine joined a community-based reforestation project, helping restore mangrove ecosystems that serve as natural barriers against storms, erosion, and climate change.

🌿 Today, she is one of many women trained and employed through the Eva & Sonu Foundation–supported mangrove restoration initiative, in partnership with .

Together, they are planting hope — one tree at a time. 💚

🌱 Restoring Nature, Rebuilding Lives: Ko Zin Naing’s Story

“Thanks to the mangrove forest project, I can now support my children.”

Ko Zin Naing, a father of two from Htan Chaukpin village, once struggled to make ends meet as a fisherman. After Cyclone Nargis devastated his community in 2008, the vanishing mangroves left their coastline exposed — making storms more destructive and livelihoods harder to sustain.

But everything changed when he joined the Eva & Sonu Foundation’s mangrove restoration project, implemented by .

Now employed as a forest ranger, Ko Zin Naing helps monitor and protect newly planted mangroves, earning a stable income and gaining new skills.

“I used to think storms were just natural disasters we had to accept.
Now I know mangroves are our protectors — and I’m proud to be planting them for future generations.”

This is more than reforestation — it’s about restoring dignity, resilience, and opportunity.

💚 Thank you for helping make stories like this possible.

🔥 “Buying the cook stove was a big investment for us, but it was the right decision.” — Than Than Win, Thit Hla Kyin Village

In rural Myanmar, cooking over open fires is not only inefficient — it’s dangerous. Families spend up to 40% of their income collecting or buying wood, and indoor air pollution is a silent killer.

Than Than Win’s family used to cook over an open fire. But since switching to a fuel-efficient stove from the Myanmar Stoves Campaign, her life has changed:

✅ 60% less wood
✅ 80% less smoke
✅ Faster cooking — and a safer home

The stove even gives her peace of mind: “I don’t worry if I need to leave the food to fetch water or feed the animals.”

🌶️ She now has more time for farming and selling chillies — a vital cash crop — helping secure her son’s education and her family’s future.

This project is implemented by Mercy Corps Myanmar and generates Gold Standard carbon credits, making it self-sustaining while delivering real climate and social benefits.

💚 Cleaner air. Stronger forests. Healthier families.

Hornbills are known as the “farmers of the forest,” dispersing seeds over vast distances and regenerating ecosystems.

But on Koh Kood island in Thailand, the oriental pied hornbill had disappeared completely due to hunting and habitat loss.

Through our partnership with the Hornbill Research Foundation Thailand (มูลนิธิศึกษาวิจัยนกเงือก), the Eva & Sonu Foundation is bringing these magnificent birds back to the wild.

Today, oriental pied hornbills are once again soaring over Koh Kood, restoring balance to the island’s forests and inspiring hope for biodiversity. 🌳

By protecting hornbills, we are protecting forests — and the countless species, including people, who depend on them.

Hunger isn’t just about food — it’s about opportunity.

Together with Action Against Hunger UK the Eva & Sonu Foundation is helping families in Bangladesh build long-term resilience by:

✔️ Training households in homestead farming to grow nutritious food for themselves — and sell the surplus at market.
✔️ Supporting families to set up small businesses and income-generating activities such as animal rearing, tailoring, tea shops, and fishnet repair.
✔️ Empowering households with the skills and resources to fight malnutrition and poverty on their own terms.

This collaboration is about giving families the tools to break the cycle of hunger and create a healthier, more hopeful future. 💚
