Raising Awareness of Parkinson’s Through Crochet, Chai and Community

It was wonderful to see such a great turnout at the recent Parkinson’s UK and PAYA (formerly Rituals of Chai) event, bringing people together to raise awareness of Parkinson’s and share a creative and enjoyable afternoon.

The event was inspired by PAYA’s Director, whose grandmother lives with Parkinson’s. She discovered that crocheting has helped her grandmother manage her tremor and reduce rigidity in her hands, highlighting how meaningful activities and
hobbies can play an important role in living well with Parkinson’s.

Satpal Ghatora, Area Development Manager for Parkinson’s UK, spoke about Parkinson’s, including some of the common symptoms, treatments and support available. He also highlighted the range of information, advice and community
support that Parkinson’s UK provides to people affected by Parkinson’s. This was followed by a fantastic crochet workshop, giving everyone the opportunity
to have a go at crocheting a Parkinson's UK Tulip, learn something new and enjoy some creative time together. And, of course, there was free-flowing chai, with a delicious range of flavours to try! ☕️

A huge thank you to PAYA for organising such a warm, welcoming and meaningful
event, and to everyone who attended and helped make it such a success.
Events like this are a great way to raise awareness, start conversations and help
people understand more about Parkinson’s.

Welcome to the latest Spotlight on our great community groups, supporting people with Parkinson's and their carers, families and friends.

This time we're focusing on Bexley, where we have an exciting new meeting launching next month, as well as the usual regular get-together and activities.

The new support meeting will launch in Bexley, on Tuesday 1
September, from 10am-12pm at the Bexley Central Library - Chaucer Room (then on the first Tuesday of each month thereafter). The guest speaker will be Pam Smith, a Parkinson’s Local Adviser in the London team. Our Parkinson’s Local Advisers can provide advice on living with Parkinson's, covering everything from benefits and employment, to what's on in the local area.

Our regular group meetings are for people with Parkinson's and those affected, for example carers, friends and family. They are a great way to get together and have relevant conversations, socialise and receive mutual support as well as listen to organised
professional speakers e.g. Parkinson's Nurses and Parkinson's UK Research staff plus more specialist subjects. If you're unsure about what happens at a group meeting or the benefits of attending, see this video, part of a series which tells you a bit more about what to expect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX7QzQRAvjA&list=PL1ixQpbHed3Z7bPJK91gBabzwrWWHcXwJ&index=6

More information about the new Bexley Central Library get-together can be found here. We'd love to see you there.

Come and have a cuppa and find out more about what the group offer in the local area, and what activities you can get involved in, from Yoga, Non-contact Boxing, Walking Football and other exercise classes. One month to go until Walk for Parkinson's at Battersea Park—let's turn London blue!

If joining us has been sitting on your to-do list, this is your friendly reminder to lock in your spot—registration closes on Sunday 30th August!

There is still time to sign up, get involved, and enjoy a cracking day out with our incredible community. Whether you choose the 1.5-mile short route or take on the 6.2-mile walk, it's a wonderful opportunity to bring families, friends, and supporters together in one place. We all have different reasons for walking, but when we walk together, we are stronger.

Most importantly, every step taken directly supports our Nurse Appeal. We desperately need more specialists, and the funds raised will go directly toward funding new nurse posts and delivering extra training to healthcare professionals so more people can live well with Parkinson’s.
