The Guernica Group promotes accountability through transnational investigations and litigation to address human rights violation nationally addressing the culture of impunity by enforcing international criminal norms to prevent their recurrence. The Guernica Group takes its name from one of the most heinous war crimes committed in modern history and immortalized by Pablo Picasso’s famous painting.

The bombing of the town of Guernica in the Spanish Basque Country on 26 April 1937 by German and Italian warplanes at the request of the Spanish Nationalists, killed more than 1,600 civilians, the majority women, and children.
