English Chamber Choir

English Chamber Choir The English Chamber Choir is one of London's busiest and diverse chamber choirs.

The English Chamber Choir came into existence in 1972 its earliest engagements included Haydn's Nelson Mass, Fauré's Requiem and Kodály 's Laudes Organi with Hertfordshire Chamber Orchestra, and live performances at the old Rainbow Theatre in Finsbury Park, of the rock-opera Tommy with The Who. These were followed by Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Centre of the Earth with the LSO at the Royal Festi

val Hall. Over the years the choir has performed in all the major concert halls in London (South Bank, Barbican, St John's Smith Square, Cadogan Hall), in St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Westminster Cathedral and many other churches known for their musical traditions. It has sung abroad in Brussels, Antwerp, Basel, Zurich, Athens and Plovdiv (Bulgaria), and has visited many cities, towns and villages throughout the UK. It has appeared at the Chelsea Festival, the Byzantine Festival in London and as part of the Encounters exhibition at the Barber Institute in Birmingham. In May 2012 it made its debut at the Brighton Festival - England's biggest arts festival. It has sung by invitation for the Lord Mayor of London at the Mansion House and HM The Queen at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. In 2012 it re-recorded Wakeman's Journey to the Centre of the Earth at Abbey Road Studios.

Come and Sing with the English Chamber Choir from 1.00 - 5.30pm on Saturday 4th July, at Holy Sepulchre Church, "The National Musicians Church", Holborn Viaduct, London.

We will be conducted and encouraged by our Artistic Director and composer, Rufus Frowde, and accompanied by Richard Sisson (formerly of musical comedy duo Kit and The Widow).

Singers will explore new works which the choir has premiered and will soon be recording, alongside Tippett’s Spirituals from ‘A Child of Our Time’.

This will include a new work by Asha Parkinson, whose work has been praised for its colour, sophistication, and humanity.“Asha’s work is in tune with the world, which like it, can sometimes be joyful, tormented, poetic.” (Paris Move). We are also thrilled that Richard Sisson has offered to share insights of his compositional process during the afternoon.

Birdsongs (excerpt): Richard Sisson

This World is Not Conclusion: Asha Parkinson

Spirituals from 'A Child of Our Time': Michael Tippett

Love Divine: Rufus Frowde

Tickets are now available for this event, with discounts for students and under-25s.

"...the work excites the ears almost as much as Tallis's original. Indeed, in one area 'Spem in alium' is surpassed, for the Latin text that MacMillan sets, an Easter 'sprinkling song' topped off with radiant hallelujahs, suits the music's engulfing waves much more than Tallis's prayerful words." (The Times)

ECC performs MacMillan's 40-part motet 'Vidi Aquam' this Palm Sunday 29 March St Mary Magdalene, Richmond Team Ministry alongside the choir's annual performance of Stainer's 'The Crucifixion'. Tickets still available from Eventbrite and on the door.
