Meet Team ECHO 2027

Behind every incredible runner or fundraiser is an equally incredible team of volunteers, and we’re so excited to introduce two of the amazing people who’ll be supporting our events throughout 2027, including the London Landmarks Half Marathon and the London Marathon.

Louis
After taking on the London Landmarks Half Marathon, Louis not only smashed his personal best but exceeded his fundraising target too.

“Having the support of ECHO behind me throughout the race really helped when I felt exhausted, giving me that much-needed extra boost. I felt so proud to say I was running for ECHO. All it takes is one step to truly make a positive difference.”

As Dad to Finley, Louis knows first-hand the difference ECHO makes to heart families.

“All I thought was this half-marathon was nothing compared to what my boy had to endure during his stay at the Evelina. If my son can get through heart surgery, then I can get through this run.”

Now he’s giving back as a volunteer, helping support fundraisers beginning their own heart journey and making every ECHO event extra special.

Gemma
Heart mum, dedicated volunteer, and the heart behind Team ECHO.

“ECHO helped my family so much when I became a heart mum, and have kept us in the ECHO family ever since. It feels good to be able to give back and help other families who need our support.”

Last year, Gemma helped organise our first official marathon team and loved every moment.

“Meeting the runners after they finished their race and giving them the biggest cheer was so emotional. I can’t wait to be part of Team ECHO 2027 and hear this year’s runners’ ‘why’.”

A huge thank you to Louis, Gemma and every volunteer who gives their time, energy and passion to support ECHO and our amazing runners. We couldn’t do it without you.

ECHO’s Sibling Stars

Our Sibling Stars project, developed in partnership with ECHO and Cardiac Psychology, has celebrated the incredible role that siblings play in the lives of children with CHD.

Over the years, we’ve worked hard to ensure that brothers and sisters are recognised as an important part of our community, and now we’re creating a new resource with the help of some of our amazing Sibling Stars.

Today we had a lovely day thinking about Siblings.

If your child has CHD and has a brother or sister, we’d love to receive photos of them together.

Please send the highest-quality images you have and, where possible, the original photo rather than one sent via WhatsApp. When emailing your photo, please include:• Names of those featured• Their ages Consent for us to use the images
Send your photographs to: [email protected]

Thank you for helping us celebrate the special bond between siblings

Huge thanks to RMH, we had a great time with the families.

Volunteers at the Heart of ECHO

On Saturday, Sam, our CEO, and Marie, our Families and Volunteer Coordinator, spent the day with some of ECHO’s wonderful volunteers, discussing their inspiring support, where ECHO is today, and where we are heading next.

For more than 43 years, we have been proud to develop our services with and by people with lived experience of congenital heart disease (CHD).

Together, we explored ways to strengthen volunteer engagement, including improving communication, creating a digital volunteering jobs board for those who can spare an hour from home, keeping volunteers updated on members’ needs, and expanding our reach across a wider geographical area.

The day also gave us time to reflect on ECHO’s long and valued relationship with Ronald McDonald House. For over four decades, we have shared a commitment to supporting families when they need it most. Being back at RMH brought back many memories for our volunteers, particularly of their time supporting families at Guy’s Hospital.

Our volunteers bring a wealth of experience, from those who have been with ECHO for more than 16 years to those who have only recently joined us. Everyone enjoyed the plant workshop, shared plenty of laughs, and left feeling connected and inspired.

Thank you to Marie for organising such a fantastic day, to Ronald McDonald House for hosting us, to Niki HOIME, and most importantly to all our volunteers.

Your dedication helps us support children and families across our community every day.

Happy Volunteer Week!

A huge thank you to all of our amazing volunteers. Whether you support us in the office, in the hospital, at events, through our antenatal services, or remotely from home, we want you to know just how much we appreciate everything you do.

At ECHO, we know that your time is one of the most valuable gifts you can give. Every hour you volunteer is like a huge donation, helping us provide support to children, families, and staff.

The recent changes have been challenging for everyone, but our volunteers have continued to step up, show up, and make a difference. Your dedication, flexibility, and commitment have helped us support those who have needed us most, and we are incredibly grateful.

Quite simply, we wouldn't be ECHO & connecting the childrens heart community without you.

Thank you for your compassion, your generosity, and for being such an important part of the ECHO community.

Hazel and John shared their memories with our current Board members, Alex and Steve a few years ago for our 40th, reflecting on the support parents needed when ECHO was first established.

It’s a powerful reminder of why our charity exists and the incredible role volunteers have always played in supporting families.

Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. From supporting mums and dads following an antenatal diagnosis, to visiting families on the wards, organising activities and days out, preparing care packs, delivering gifts, and serving as trustees and advisers, they help us be there for families every step of the way.

Without our volunteers, we simply couldn’t provide the support that so many families rely on.

An amazing fact: ECHO was founded 43 years ago by volunteers. They were parents who had spent time at their child’s bedside, speaking with doctors at GSTT, and recognised the need for emotional and practical support for families facing a congenital heart diagnosis.

More than four decades later, that same spirit of compassion, understanding and dedication continues to drive everything we do.

To every ECHO volunteer, past and present, thank you. Your time, commitment and kindness make a real difference to families when they need it most.
