Answering frequently asked questions...

Do I need to have done yoga before to participate in Park Yoga?

Absolutely not! We welcome all levels at Park Yoga, but particularly beginners. Our charitable aim at Park Yoga is to help more people try yoga and experience the benefits, especially if it's not something they've had access to before.

We offer a relaxed environment, in the beautiful Greenwich Park, which means you can come along and participate in the way that is best for you.

We offer lots of different options to help you move your body in the best way possible, but also give you the space to be able to choose what you participate with. If you want to spend the whole session in savasana or a seated pose, we're more than happy!

We have beginners join us for the first time every week, so if you've been thinking about giving it a go, you won't be the only person.

If you're nervous, or not sure what to expect, come and speak to me (Aimie) or one of our lovely volunteers at the beginning, and we can help you to feel more comfortable.

Top Tips for Tadasana (Mountain Pose)

Tadasana is a standing posture that helps us ground into the earth beneath us, ready to start out sun salutations. We do it every week but, despite outward appearances, our mountain pose should be active and strong, so we can find stability in our body before we start flowing.

Here are 5 alignment principles for our Tadasana:
1. Feet are strong and grounded using all three corners of the foot (either side of the ball of the foot and the heel).

2. The legs are active. It should feel like you're pushing the ground away. Try not to lock the knees as this can cause some discomfort.

3. Tuck your tailbone under!

4. Roll the shoulders away from the ears and keep the arms strong beside you with the palm of the hand facing forwards.

5. Think about shining the crown of the head towards the sky. I find it helpful to imagine a beam of light entering the body through the crown of the head and exiting through my feet.

As always, ensure you're listening to what your body is telling you and adjust as needed.

ANSWERING FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does Park Yoga go ahead in the rain?

Whilst we always hope for bright skies and sunshine, the British summertime often has other ideas.

We will always try to go ahead with our Park Yoga sessions, even if there is some rain, so that we can embrace nature in all it's rainy glory and enjoy the patter of the raindrops on the trees (one of my favourite sounds).

However, if there is a torrential downpour, thunder and lightning, or the wind means it's not safe for us to go ahead, we'll announce any cancellations here by 8.30am. If it's raining, keep a watch here before leaving.

Top Tips for Virabhadrasana 1 (Warrior 1)

Warrior 1 is a great foundational yoga pose which helps to open the chest and strengthen the legs. We quite often work into this pose with lots of different arm variations.

Here are some fundamental top tips to help with your alignment.

1. Front knee is bent and driving forward. We're trying to avoid the knee collapsing inwards, so keep it strong.

2. The back foot is at about a 45 degree angle, pointing towards the top corner of your mat. Ideally, the back foot is grounded. If your foot is coming off the floor, you can narrow your stance slightly.

3. Hips are square to the front of the mat. Think about pulling the hip crease back on the front leg, and pushing forward with the hip crease on the back leg.

4. Arms are strong (no matter what variation you're in). Keep the shoulders away from the ears and drive energy up through the arms to the very tips of your finger.

5. Remember the breathe! As you inhale, grow tall through the spine, as you exhale, see if you can move a little deeper into the posture.

Bonus tip number 6. Listen to your body! If something doesn't feel right, or you experience any discomfort, ease off to a variation that works for you.
