Yesterday, PAG led a 2-hour walkabout in torrential rain with representatives of TfL, Go Ahead Buses, Wandsworth Council (incl. Cllr Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, and leader of the council Cllr Simon Hogg), Leonie Cooper AM, Cllr Ethan Brooks, Cllr Nick Austin, and Kieran McCarthy from Putney News (18 people in total!)

We walked from Wandsworth Park through Putney Bridge Road, High Street, Upper Richmond Road, Norroy Road, Quill Lane, Felsham, and key pinch-points on Lower Richmond Road.

Outside Kenilworth Court, everyone witnessed the real-time impact of bus driver changeovers and how quickly congestion builds. This shared visibility was a major step forward.

Several priority fixes were discussed:
• Removing the traffic island on Putney Bridge Rd to increase green time for two lanes.
• Pavement narrowing outside M&S to ease flow.
• A future bus stop cut-in outside TK Maxx.
• Leonie Cooper AM & Cllr Ethan Brooks exploring a safe crossing/zebra on Upper Richmond Rd near Oxford Rd.
• Putney already has 11 air quality monitors, and more can be installed if we request them.

Plus wider issues: v**e A-boards, messy late-night takeaways, long-term water leaks, and Putney’s overall streetscape.

What we have achieved:
👉 Cross-party, cross-agency action is finally happening — on the streets, with us, not behind closed doors.
👉 Everyone turned up, listened, and saw the reality first-hand.

Enough is enough. Stop funnelling the London transport system through Putney! Even more problems are about to coexist with the current chaos. Air quality will further deteriorate, parents are scared for their children facing speeding and rat running, elderly and vulnerable can’t get a taxi to a hospital appointment and residents can’t even leave their streets because of endless traffic. END THE CHAOS NOW!

Hello neighbours,

The Putney Action Group (PAG) represents residents who are affected by recent road and layout changes to Putney Bridge junctions. These changes were meant to improve travel — but instead, it’s made air quality unbearable and increased congestion and made journeys hell for residents.

Wandsworth Council is currently running a survey, but it’s been sent only to cyclists and pedestrians, not to drivers or general road users. This risks skewing the data to ‘justify’ the changes and could lead to decisions that don’t reflect the true experiences of everyone living and travelling here.

👉 Please take a few minutes to fill in the WBC survey and make your voice heard:

Not only this but the plans to change Wandsworth Bridge are going to further impede utter hell on residents across the borough.

We believe that the changes do not comply with the TMA 2004.

(Under the Traffic management act 2004: Has a Duty to Benefit All Road Users

The Traffic Management Act 2004 (TMA) places a legal duty on every local traffic authority (like Wandsworth Council and TfL) to manage their road networks for the benefit of all users — not just one group.

Under Section 16(1), councils must:

“secure the expeditious movement of traffic on their road network.”

Here, “traffic” is legally defined to include all types of road users — cars, buses, cyclists, pedestrians, emergency services, taxis, and freight vehicles.
The council has a legal duty to ensure that traffic moves expeditiously and that congestion is avoided / reduced as far as practicable. If a new layout (cycle lanes, pedestrian crossings, etc.) has increased congestion, then the plan is failing a primary duty under the TMA.)

💥8.50am Disraeli Road - the usual chaos

Standstill traffic, horns blaring, idling engines, even emergency vehicles stuck. Poor residents live it daily YET we’re told air pollution is coming down… while no one’s monitoring what’s pushed into Putney’s side streets. 🤔🚦🚑🌫️

Another ‘survey’… but only handed to pedestrians and cyclists at one part of Putney Bridge 🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️

It’s a total box-ticking exercise — the questions are bent to justify the junction, ignoring the real issue: traffic.

PAG have already handed over feedback from nearly 1,400 residents! We’re investigating whether these road plans were ever reviewed or adjusted after Hammersmith Bridge closed — because the current chaos suggests they weren’t. 💭🚦
