"Building deeper relationships through the Christmas Appeal"

Karen Edwards

This workshop will look at how we can use the Christmas Appeal to make connections and build relationships with the families we come into contact with. The annual appeal offers so much potential to create lasting relationships and be an effective missional tool. Together we will explore how we can realise this potential, perhaps without having to make any major changes. We will look at current practices and share examples from various settings of ideas they have used to deepen the connections made with families. Christmas is the period when we potentially encounter more families than any other time of the year, come and see how we can make these encounters more meaningful.

Karen trained as a primary school teacher, specialising in Early Years education before leaving to work for The Salvation Army. She was employed as a Community Manager for 12 years, working within her corps in North Wales. She now works for the Community Services Department as one of the Territorial Community Engagement Leads which she has done for almost five years. Karen now worships at Rock Ferry Corps along with her husband and two young sons. She is an active corps member and is part if the leadership team. She is passionate about seeing corps supporting their local communities, building relationships with those we serve and seeing this develop into Kingdom growth.

Toddler groups - safe spaces for families: Recognising and responding to domestic abuse

Deb Stanbury-Juster, Assistant Director, Family Ministries

Parent and toddler groups are often trusted spaces where families find friendship, support, and community. This interactive seminar will help toddler group leaders and team members understand what domestic abuse is, recognise possible signs of abuse, and know how to respond appropriately and compassionately when concerns arise. Drawing on Salvation Army safeguarding policy and the expertise and resources of the Christian charity Restored, the session will combine teaching, discussion, quizzes, and video content to explore practical ways of creating safer environments and supporting families with confidence, sensitivity, and hope.

Deb Juster joined the Family Ministries Team as Assistant Director 9 years ago, developing the Army's partnership with the Christian charity Restored, working together on the domestic abuse agenda. She previously worked in the Probation Service for almost 30 years and also as a freelance Safeguarding Trainer. She attends Sutton corps and has served there as the 'Toddler Time' team leader. Deb loves being outdoors in nature, running and walking, often with her dog Murphy!

GET SET! CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

"Supporting dads, father figures and their children"

Who Let The Dads Out? began at Hoole Baptist Church in Chester in 2003 and is now the largest network of dads groups in the UK. Thousands of dads, father figures and their children go along to a group every month. Mark Chester, the founder, will tell the story of how it all began, how it grew and how churches and other organisations can get involved and run a group themselves.

Mark works for Care for the Family. He has been involved in running parent and toddler groups for over twenty years and is the founder of Who Let The Dads Out?, the largest network of groups specifically for dads and their children in the UK. He is the author of several books, a frequent media contributor and regularly speaks to audiences throughout the UK and beyond. He has previously worked in government, the church and Premier League Football.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Reverend Steven Bunting MBE is the national engagement lead for Kids Matter UK who partner with churches across the UK to support families growing up in poverty. From a challenging childhood in poverty, he has a huge heart for the power of the local church to transform families and communities for generations.
We are delighted that Steven will be our keynote speaker for the day. speaking under the title: "More Than Play - Building relationships. Sharing hope. Growing God’s Family"

Toddler groups are one of the Salvation Army’s most powerful missional spaces. In this keynote, Steven will be exploring how these groups offer pastoral care, build deep community, and create natural opportunities for faith formation. He will encourage leaders to be bold, authentic and confident in sharing Jesus through everyday relationships — trusting that God is already at work in their groups.

Steve will also be leading a workshop where he will share about the work of Kids Matter and how your church can strengthen its links with the local community and schools by supporting the most vulnerable families. We are delighted to be Introducing yet another great workshop available at our Get SET! Parent and Toddler Group Conference on Saturday 5th September at William Booth College, London

Refresh Café: Introducing Families to Faith Through Toddler Groups

Refresh is a toddler group with a difference. Alongside a welcoming play space, we have a short, five-minute “thought for the day” for adults, sharing something of God in a gentle, relevant and accessible way.

This workshop will explore the vision and practicalities of the Refresh model, including how to deliver a short thought. You’ll also hear encouraging stories of families coming to know Jesus. We hope to inspire and equip you to run your own Refresh group.

Caroline Montgomery is the pioneer of Refresh and author of the Refresh book. She has worked in Family Life Ministry for over 20 years and has a background in Social Work with Children and Families. Caroline and her husband Richard have been married for 39 years and have a grown-up and expanding family. Having lived in Asia and worked with children and families there as well as being foster carers in the UK, Caroline is passionate about supporting families. The Refresh model, established in 2011, now runs in churches across the UK, Germany and Australia.

It’s not ‘just’ a parent and toddler group – 12 top tips for school readiness.

An exploration and celebration of how a locally run toddler group can be a wonderful opportunity for children and their parents/carers to prepare for school and obviously so much more! A time to reflect on how the grassroots simplicity of our toddler groups is doing far more than we think including the power of playdough!

Jo Gordon is the founder and CEO of Daniel’s Den, a parent and toddler charity that works to promote the value of parent and toddler groups on a local and national level. A Yorkshire lady at heart, Jo came to London to be a primary school teacher but is now devoting her time into bringing about her vision for having a parent and toddler group within walking distance of every family in the UK. She has the vision, drive, and experience to make it happen.

Seen as a go to voice on parent and toddler groups, Jo has contributed to numerous publications for the likes of Unicef and the Archbishop’s Council and has spoken at national events and led numerous workshops. This is in addition to still running a weekly group in Wembley.

Jo leads the London Network of Parent and Toddler Groups and the 1277 Make Them Count Movement, utilising her experience in supporting toddler group leaders across the UK and Ireland.

Equipping Toddler Group Teams to Support Parents and Carers

Anna Hawken, Parenting for Faith Ministry Lead, Parenting For Faith - BRF

Parents and carers often have questions, worries and opportunities to explore faith during the ordinary moments of a toddler group. This workshop will equip toddler group teams to make the most of these one-to-one conversations, using practical tools and accessible ideas from the Parenting for Faith approach. Together we'll explore how to listen well, encourage parents in their role as the primary nurturers of their children's faith, and create natural pathways for families to feel welcomed into the wider church community.

Anna Hawken is the Parenting for Faith Ministry Lead at BRF Ministries, equipping churches, parents and children's leaders to help children and teenagers develop a vibrant, lifelong faith as part of normal everyday life. She co-hosts the Parenting for Faith podcast, hosts the Parenting for Faith Babies and Toddlers Course and is author of Being God's Child: A Parent's Guide. She has four children and volunteers at her church with the one to three year olds and supporting families through child dedication and their next steps.
