Hackney Archives holds a collection of 150,000 negatives captured between 1952 and 1979 by Ron Gibson’s photography studio in Hackney. The Gibson collection records the people of Hackney as they got married, worked, celebrated and mourned and offers a unique in

sight into life in Hackney and surrounding areas over a 27 year period. Over the next two years Hackney Archives will be digitising the collection so that images from the collection can be shared publicly, for example on Hackney Archives’ page. We understand that due to the nature of the collection there may be sensitivities about certain photographs being made publicly available. If you believe that an image on our page should not be made public please email us at [email protected] (please use the subject heading ‘Gibson’) with details of the image you are concerned about or telephone us on 020 8356 8925.

Abney Unearthed - Remapped, Researched, Rediscovered

Opened in 1840, Abney Park is one of London’s ‘Magnificent 7’ Victorian cemeteries, located in Stoke Newington. The 32 acre site is the resting place of over 200,000 people. Designated a nature reserve in 1993, it is also home to a wide variety of flora and fauna including veteran trees, rare fungi and invertebrates.

Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Hackney Council, Abney Unearthed is an exciting project to remap the cemetery and discover more about the people buried there. A team of dedicated volunteers are adding missing information to the burial records and researching the people, bringing their diverse stories to life.

Haydn who runs the project will explain the project and why it is so vital. Hackney Archives is hosting an exhibition with displays including a project overview, a brief history of Abney Park, plot maps and stories of just some of the fascinating figures who lived and worked in Hackney, helping shape the place we know now.

Every headstone has a story - visit the exhibition to discover some of them.

Hackney Libraries presents a celebration of 40 years of the renaming of Dalston C.L.R. James Library, with a special panel of speakers we will be discussing the relationship between C.L.R. James and Hackney. We will look back to the renaming of Dalston Library and reflect on collective action, unity, and the power of the people to enact change.

James' work and activism were rooted in the idea that communities, particularly those that have been marginalized, can find strength through solidarity and collective action.

CLR James remains an important figure in contemporary discussions on race, class, and revolutionary politics. His ideas on the relationship between culture and politics have inspired the world to challenge the legacies of colonialism and influence contemporary thought.

Join us for an exciting afternoon of talk, reflection, informal discussion and debate. There will be time afterwards to chat with community partners and guests.

Saturday, March 15 · 2 - 6pm GMT.
Doors at 2pm

Location
ESEA Community Centre 12-14 Englefield Road London N1 4LS

This year, 2025, marks the 50th anniversary of the end of what has become known as “The Vietnam War” or the end of the Second Indochina War.

Now is the time for the Vietnamese and Southeast Asian diaspora and the wider world to gather and reflect on both the horror and celebrate the extraordinary resilience of our communities. We must focus on not only what we remember but how we remember too.

Join An Viet Archives for a day that will reflect on what it means to remember - exploring how communities share memory through archives, art, performances, games, and food!
