Integrated Neurological Services Living well with a neurological condition: Lifelong rehabilitation & therapy in Richmond and Hounslow

INS has been working for over 30 years in Hounslow and Richmond to support adults living with neurological conditions, and their carers, to access long-term, professional and peer support in the community, helping them to manage symptoms, increase independence and live well with their condition. Our team of professional therapists (physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy), trained counsellors, therapy assistants, activity co-ordinators and volunteers) work in different locations, as well as online, to give our service users the skills, strategies and support to manage their condition and help them stay connected with their social and community networks. We can provide the affordable, ongoing neurological care and rehabilitation, which is not available on the NHS, to help people improve their condition or prevent it from deteriorating. Our multidisciplinary team provides holistic therapy, social and emotional support tailored to people’s individual rehabilitation needs and goals. Neurological conditions can be life-changing if they cause long-term disability and affect people’s ability to live independently. At INS, we assess the whole person before providing services and support to help with physical, cognitive and communication issues and improve people’s independence, confidence and social participation. We offer support for as long as needed, often over many years. Help and advice is also available for family carers, many of whom have health issues of their own.

We are delighted to welcome Elara Karimi and Rory Van Niekerk to our Board of Trustees!

Elara and Rory bring extensive experience and invaluable insights to their roles as members of our Clinical Committee, and we look forward to working with them both as we continue providing vital community-based neurorehabilitation and support for adults with neurological conditions and their carers in Hounslow and Richmond.

Elara joins us with a PhD in Developmental Neuroscience and hands-on experience of INS, having volunteered with us in 2015. As a trustee, she hopes to bring together her experience across neuroscience, research and education to support INS and its work.

Bringing NHS clinical and strategic experience to the Board, Rory is a senior NHS nurse, Lead Nurse for Post-Registration Clinical Education, and a University Lecturer. He is keen to support INS in maintaining high-quality, safe and person-centred services while continuing to develop the organisation's clinical workforce and governance arrangements for people living with neurological conditions and their carers.

It's . Our risk of falling increases as we age, but people of any age can have an increased risk of falling, particularly if you are living with a neurological condition.

Here are some top tips to reduce your chance of falling:

πŸ’§ Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, particularly when exercising or in warm weather.
πŸ‘“οΈ Take care of your vision by going for regular eye tests and wearing glasses or contact lenses if prescribed.
πŸ‘Ÿ Wear secure footwear that is in good condition.
πŸƒβ€βž‘οΈ Take your time when moving and avoid rushing, and use a walking aid if it helps you to remain steady. Our clinical team can help you find the right walking aid to suit your needs.
🦴 Maintain your balance, bone health, and strength through appropriate movement and exercise.
βœ”οΈ Get regular blood pressure checks and medication reviews.
🏠️ Fall-proof your home by keeping clutter to a minimum and ensuring you have sufficient lighting.

If you are having regular falls, or are worried about falling, it is important to talk to your GP. You can ask your GP to refer you to your local falls prevention service.

Age UK Richmond upon Thames offer a handyperson service to help you live independently and safely at home by delivering small adaptations and repairs, like installing grab rails and ramps, or clearing leaves from your front path.

The service is available for those over 65, unpaid carers and those of any age with long term disabilities living in Richmond.

Call 020 3326 9432 or email [email protected] to book.

If you have a neurological condition or care for someone with a neurological condition and live in Hounslow or Richmond, INS can offer support, therapies and advice. Visit https://buff.ly/Z3X0Qb4 to find out more and refer yourself or someone else.
