MQ Mental Health Research

MQ Mental Health Research Right now, up to one in four people around the world is living with a mental health condition. For many the experience can be painful, exhausting and isolating.

MQ invests in world-class scientific research into mental health conditions so that we can better understand, effectively treat and ultimately prevent mental illness. That’s a quarter of all people living with an illness that affects their wellbeing, their relationships with family and friends, and their ability to work. Despite extraordinary advances in treating physical health conditions, progr

ess in understanding mental illness, and research into its causes, treatments and prevention, is nowhere near equal. In fact it falls woefully short, leaving millions of people worldwide without the help and support they need. We’re here to change that. With offices in London and New York, we fund much-needed scientific research to transform the lives of everyone affected by mental illness. And with our community of supporters and an international network of talented researchers we can make this a reality.

Is all movement equally good for mental health?

Not quite. The intention behind exercise, like joy, social connection, or stress relief, can shape its effects.

AI is rapidly reshaping mental health care, opening up new ways to support people and improve efficiency.

But it’s important to remember: while AI can help with things like psychoeducation, journaling and admin, it can’t replace human connection, clinical judgement or real-time support in a crisis.

That human connection is especially vital for therapies like EMDR, which rely on close, clinician-led interaction.

In this joint article, the EMDR International Association and MQ explore both the promise and the risks of AI in mental health. And why it’s so important that we use it carefully and responsibly to protect people’s wellbeing.

MQ researcher Professor Colette Hirsch, of NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre and Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King's College London has found that bringing a positive mental image to mind can help people stop worrying once it has started.

In a study of people with high levels of worry, those trained in positive imagery were better able to interrupt worry and shift their attention to non‑negative thoughts, especially when guided through the technique.

Research like this builds the foundations for better treatments for mental illnesses. Researchers like professor Hirsch are turning psychological science into tools that could one day make a real difference.
