We’re featured in 🤙

The article covers something we think about every day, who gets to experience the ocean, and the real benefits of doing so. Too many young people from urban communities grow up without any connection to blue spaces. We exist to change that, for the young people and for the environment.

The piece is also direct about something the surf community needs to sit with: young people from underserved areas are still underrepresented on our beaches and in our coastal communities. That’s not just an access problem — it’s a cultural one, and the surf community can help change that.

Big credit to for using their platform to tell this story and to and for their support and contributions. Wavelength is one of the longest-running surf titles out there. A magazine with real heritage covering a small London charity says something.

Grab a copy, the feature is beautifully put together. Huge thanks to everyone who made it happen. 🌊

Welcome to the team Lee! 🤙🏼

Raised in East London, Lee has dedicated more than 25 years to education and is currently an Executive Headteacher across two primary schools. Alongside this, he works with local and national education organisations to help shape educational practice and policy.

As a Trustee at GET OUT, Lee is leading the development of our new schools programme — ensuring our work with young people is grounded in real school experience and supports both wellbeing and learning through access to blue and green spaces.

When young people are given access to blue spaces, connection follows. That connection is often the first step towards better wellbeing, confidence, and environmental action.

🌊 78% felt more connected to nature and water after taking part in GET OUT programmes.

For many young people we work with, these experiences are their first real opportunity to spend time in blue spaces — to feel calm, capable, and connected.

When young people are given access to blue spaces, connection follows.

77.8% of young people we worked with reported feeling more connected to nature and water after joining our programmes.

Connection isn’t just about being outdoors — it’s about confidence, wellbeing, belonging, and inspiring care for the environment.

This is what happens when access becomes opportunity and opportunity becomes action.

💙 85.3% of GET OUT participants told us their mood improved after spending time on the water.
This insight comes from feedback from 315 young people who took part in our surf and paddleboard programmes in 2025.

For many of the young people we work with, access to blue spaces isn’t a given.
Time on the water creates space to breathe, reset, and reconnect with themselves, with others, and with the natural world.

Small changes in mood can make a big difference to young people’s mental wellbeing.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more of what young people told us about their experiences, in their own words as well as through the data.

This is why access to blue spaces matters.

Welcome to the team, Gurvinder ✨

As we reflect on our most successful year to date, we’re also doing important work behind the scenes at GET OUT — strengthening our foundations, refreshing our thinking, and building the team that will take us into 2026 and beyond.

We’re stoked to welcome Gurvinder as a new Trustee. Gurvinder is passionate about protecting the planet, with a particular focus on oceans and their diverse ecosystems. Her connection to the ocean shaped her academic journey, including a Geography degree and a Master’s in International Relations from the University of Portsmouth, sparking a deep interest in the intersection of climate issues, ocean conservation and policy.

Gurvinder has worked with impact-driven organisations such as Oceana and Greenpeace, contributing to campaigns focused on ocean protection and climate justice. She is a strong advocate for solutions that protect the environment while improving people’s lives.

At GET OUT, Gurvinder is excited to apply her campaigning and communications expertise to help break down barriers to nature and blue spaces, ensuring more underrepresented communities can access, experience and protect the ocean. As a Londoner, she truly understands the barriers many young people face in accessing blue and green spaces and the impact that access can have.

Welcome aboard, Gurvinder. We’re excited for what’s ahead 🌊💙

Why Ocean Access Matters.
Link below.

This piece with Finisterre explores why ocean access matters, and how GET OUT works to remove barriers so more young people can experience the sea — often for the very first time.
For many young people growing up in cities, the coast can feel distant — physically, socially, emotionally.

But access to blue spaces isn’t a luxury.
It’s important for wellbeing, confidence, belonging, and care for the natural world.

It’s about more than surfing.
It’s about equity, opportunity, and changing what feels possible.

🌊 We are stoked to welcome Kizzy Beaumont to the GET OUT team as a Research & Evaluation Advisor 🤙🏼Kizzy is a passionate ocean advocate and soon-to-be PhD graduate from the University of Plymouth. Her research explores how community-led models like National Marine Parks and World Surfing Reserves can spark bottom-up change in ocean governance.

With experience spanning marine biology, biodiversity, environmental law and education, Kizzy has worked on projects with Natural England and the Digital Marine Citizenship programme, using creative and digital tools to widen access to our coasts.

She’s taught across further education and higher education, engaged communities of all ages, and began her journey in public aquariums where her love for marine storytelling took root. 🐠
She’s passionate about making research accessible — whether teaching in classrooms, running beach sessions, or designing creative ways for young people to connect with the ocean.

From January 2026, Kizzy joins the Wildlife Trust as Coastal Communities Engagement Officer for Cornwall, Devon & Dorset and will also become GET OUT’s Research & Evaluation Advisor, helping us deepen our evidence base and champion community-led ocean futures. 💙🌍

We’re thrilled to welcome Carmen Martinez to the GET OUT Board of Trustees! 🤙🏼

As we reach the end of the year, we’re taking time to step back, reflect and strengthen our strategy for 2025 and beyond. As a small charity, our Trustees play a vital role in guiding our mission, and we’re excited to be expanding our Board to bring in more leadership, insight and lived experience. Carmen is the first of several new Trustees joining us during this period of growth.

Carmen brings incredible experience leading youth and education programmes in East London. As Centre Leader at IntoUniversity Bow, she works every day with young people in Tower Hamlets , helping them unlock potential, build confidence, and access opportunities far beyond the classroom.

Her deep understanding of local communities and her commitment to empowering young people make her an invaluable addition to the GET OUT team. With her support, we’ll continue breaking down barriers to nature, blue spaces and adventure for young Londoners.

Welcome aboard, Carmen, we’re glad to have you with us! 🤙🏼

What an incredible Youth Ocean Summit!
Over a few days of surfing, exploring, and youth-led discussions, 28 young people from London came together to connect with nature, surf, share ideas, and shape a resource for protecting our oceans and waterways.

💡 The voices of young people were at the heart of every session — from exploring the barriers they face in connecting and protecting nature, to brainstorming real solutions and actions they can take in their schools, communities, and daily lives.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this possible — our inspiring young participants, our amazing sponsors and partners, and all the staff, volunteers, and supporters who helped bring the Summit to life.

We’re proud of the ideas and leadership shown, and we can’t wait to share the youth-created resource and video that’s now in the making. 🌍💙

Say hello to our Tower Hamlets Crew! 👋🌊

Over the summer, this wonderful team completed a 3 day residential surf camp for some ocean therapy, confidence building, and serious fun.

We enjoyed beach workshops, paddle boarding and camped out for the whole stay. The first day is often the most nerve-racking, but just wait to see what we got up to…!
