How is Prevent used to silence Palestine solidarity?
Despite being designed to target Muslims, referrals for right wing extremism have outstripped Islamic extremism for the past four years.
Dominic Murphy, the Head of Scotland Yard's counter-terrorism unit said that referrals to Prevent were "through the roof" after October 7th. But it isn't clear how opposing an ongoing genocide is a form of extremism - especially when the UK finally recognised the state of Palestine last week.
At Insaafi, we've been working on Palestine solidarity and Prevent over the past 18 months. We've heard anecdotal evidence that families and individuals have been referred to Prevent for Palestine solidarity.
Chillingly, every single council, local authority and government department rejected our Freedom of Information requests on Prevent. In one response, were were told that releasing information on the ethnicity of Prevent referrals may "fuel grievances" about the scheme, such as the idea it disproportionately targets Muslims.
We can't tell if Prevent is being weaponised against our communities for freedom of speech if the government refuses to provide data on the ethnicity of Prevent referrals.
Prevent deems any ideology that supports the break up of the United Kingdom as a form of extremism. Consequently, we've reports of Welsh language schools boycotting Prevent because every governor at the school supported Welsh independence.
Prevent is at a crossroads, and it's shrouded in secrecy.
Join us at our research launch tomorrow with keynote speaker Arun Kundnani. We are delighted to also be joined by Sukaina Rajwani (), who is the mother of political prisoner Fatema Zainab Rajwani.
