🚨 | Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s ambitions to reform social care will be a success if they include plans to end grotesque exploitation and extortion.

Our latest report reveals how employers are exploiting migrant nursing staff in social care by taking advantage of their vulnerable visa status to demand huge repayments, underpay, re-write contracts to alter their pay and conditions and more.

For years, our members have bravely spoken out and sought support against these appalling practices, but we know these cases are just the tip of the iceberg.

While social care policy is devolved, immigration rules apply UK wide. The UK government must now stabilise social care in all four nations by changing UK-wide immigration rules, ending the control of employers over visa sponsorship, stopping them from using immigration status as leverage.

No member of the nursing community should go to work and expect or face violence and aggression.

Yet attacks against nursing staff in the capital are up 252% in the last five years and nationally there were almost double the incidences of physical violence against nursing staff in 2024 compared to 2019. In addition, our data shows that nursing staff from Black British, Black African and Black Caribbean groups are disproportionally impacted.

These horrifying statistics were reported in an ITV London story by Ronke Phillips featuring the voices of three nursing staff who work across the capital. Thank you to Sarah, Joseph and David for speaking out.

RCN London Regional Director Lisa Elliott said:

"Everyday nursing staff across the capital go to work to care for their patients and keep the capital safe and healthy – yet they are not being kept safe. More must be done by NHS Trusts, the police and politicians in London to address this abhorrent behaviour.

Bridging the gap between physical and mental health can be challenging, but Dulcie from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust has done just that by developing a successful project focused around improving physical health outcomes for mental health inpatients.
