Unforgiving uniforms, outdated heating systems and lack of water stations can create dangerous work environments. Employers have a duty of care to keep you safe in hot weather

Thank you to Joel Stanton and Alicia Arias, from the Inner North Central London branch, for bringing the matter of accessible and affordable travel for the nursing workforce to RCN Congress.

We heard many experiences of the struggles and hardships nursing staff are facing just to commute to and from work. Something which is a necessity, not a luxury.

💳Some nursing staff are reporting sleeping in their cars between shifts as they can't afford to drive home.
💳Students unable to afford to attend clinical placements.
💳Community nurses unable to reach patients without going into personal debt and therefore leaving the profession.

We look forward to see what progress can be made to address this vital issue.

London members have been busy today! Great to hear from so many of you throughout the debates. You spoke so powerfully about issues including:

✅ Whether external reviews are meaningful
✅Access to pain services and the role of nurses
✅ Safety standards for lone working

Here are just some of you in action!

Thank you to the RCN London Board and Chair Aidan Slowie for submitting a resolution to lobby UK government to improve the provision of acute mental health crisis services for children and young people.

Aidan described the underprepared and struggling healthcare system as “well and truly broken” and painted a bleak picture of the current situation. He highlighted the devastating effect on children and young people and the moral injury to nursing staff, while calling for UK governments to invest now.

There was a really powerful debate, including lots of London members speaking up, and the resolution was unanimously passed.
