1001 Critical Days Foundation

1001 Critical Days Foundation We strive to ensure that every baby has the best start for life.

From pregnancy to age two - the first 1,001 critical days - we fund pioneering research, frontline practice and champion early years around the world to create a lasting impact.

Why do the 1,001 critical days matter so much?

From pregnancy to age two, a baby’s experiences help shape their future health, development and wellbeing.

That’s why we’re focused on three key areas: funding charities that support babies and families, commissioning research into what works during the earliest years, and advocating for greater recognition of this critical period around the world.

Together, we’re working to build a better world for babies.

“So much depends on your experience in those early years of life”

Today, announced that, as the winner of the 2026 Private Members’ Bill ballot, he will introduce legislation inspired by the work of the 1001 Critical Days Foundation.

The Bill recognises what the evidence has long shown: the earliest days of life matter. Experiences during pregnancy and a baby’s first two years lay the foundations for lifelong health, wellbeing and opportunity.

By seeking to place Best Start Family Hubs and the Healthy Babies programme on a statutory footing, this legislation represents an important step towards ensuring that families receive the support they need during the most critical period of child development.

We are grateful to Sir Desmond for championing this issue in Parliament and helping to put babies and families at the heart of public policy.

UK Government welcomes research commissioned by the 1001 Critical Days Foundation 📄

Thank you to Dr Kieran Mullan MP for putting forward a Written Parliamentary Question, helping to place the 1001 Critical Days Foundation's commissioned research on screen use among babies and children under two at the forefront of parliamentary discussion.

This acknowledgement marks an important step in ensuring that evidence on the impact of screen use in the earliest years of life continues to inform policy, guidance and support for families.

Early experiences shape development 💬

Babies are active communicators from the very beginning, and early experiences play an important role in shaping communication, social interaction and learning.

This Baby Communication Week, we’re spotlighting research exploring how early screen time shapes lifelong communication.

Supporting dads, Supporting babies 💙

Movember highlights the importance of support for fathers.

During her visit to Australia, Andrea Leadsom met with Assistant Minster for Social Services and Prevention of Family Violence, Ged Kearney to discuss issues affecting families, including Swansea University’s research revealing that 2–3 babies lose their dads to su***de every week.

This shocking finding is driving our new campaign to ensure dads are recognised and supported during the 1,001 critical days - because supporting dads means supporting babies too.

At The 1001 Critical Days Foundation, we believe an early years system that does not fully involve dads is incomplete. We want to ensure paternal mental health is recognised, understood, and embedded within policy, guidance, and services across the country.

Join us for a free online webinar on Wednesday 24 June at 12pm BST, bringing the sector together and exploring how organisations across the early years, mental health, and family support sectors can collaborate to build a better world for babies.
