We've had a few messages asking why the shark attack in Egypt happened. I want to start by sending our thoughts to Vladimir Popov's family, following this rare & unfortunate tragedy. I'm extremely shocked that onlookers stood by recording this event and posting it to social media. For the respect of the victim, this shouldn't have been shared.
Why? To be completely honest, I don't know, I can only guess from what I've heard and seen. It's been said that local farmers and restaurants dump meat scraps in the water, and some local tourism charters bait the waters to attract grey reef sharks for tourism. Both of these could be factors that attracted the tiger shark close to shore hunting for food. With overfishing, it's become much harder for sharks to find a meal. I read there was an alert saying a large shark had been spotted & swimming wasn't advised. However, I have no proof of this. It may have been a female coming in close to shore to have her pups and saw Vladimir as a potential threat to herself or her young, tiger sharks can be very territorial. I've been in a boat when a tiger shark has headbutted the boat for getting too close to her. It could be a mistaken identity. However, the red sea is normally known for crystal clear waters, so this is unlikely unless the bottom was stirred up, making the water murky close to shore.
The thing to remember is that these unfortunate events are incredibly rare, no wild animal is predictable, and when entering their home, we should keep this in mind.
I've read the shark also lost its life, following being caught and beaten to death by Vladimir's father. Which is also a tragic loss.
