Today, Wes Streeting, Health & Social Care Secretary, announced a landmark £500 million investment to support the introduction of a Fair Pay Agreement in England’s social care sector.
The Standard
This is a long-overdue recognition that care workers deserve dignity, stability and a fair return for the vital work they do. The agreement will establish a new negotiating body bringing together social care employers and trade unions, with the first implementation targeted for 2028.
The Standard
While this is a promising step forward, it’s clear more substantial investment will be needed if we are to close the gap and build a social care system people can rely on. As Wes Streeting himself said, this is “just the start.”
The Standard
We welcome this announcement as a signal of intention, and remain committed to holding government to account – ensuring that promise turns into real change for carers across the country.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting says he will no longer accept a social care system ‘built on poverty pay and zero hours contracts’

Jo Pitchford, speaking for GMB, seconding Composite 13 on Staffing and Adult Social Care.

Conference, I want to share a story from one of our members who told me about a carer in their mum’s care home, who had left her own family in India to do this demanding job, on the same low pay as every other care worker.

But now she is being told to leave.

So when we talk about care visas and migrants let’s remember that no worker is a problem its the broken care system after years of Tory austerity and privatisation that's the problem.

We have a staffing vacancy black hole of more than 131,000 carers.

And pay is still just pennies above the minimum wage.

Two-thirds of care workers have told GMB they cannot continue working until retirement.

Because inadequate and vague guidance on staffing levels without ratios leaves overworked and underpaid carers suffering attacks, fatigue and physical injury.

For the UK not to have legal safe staffing levels in care is scandalous.

Its a dereliction of duty to both care workers and our loved ones they care for.

But for us to match the safe staffing levels in other countries like Japan, we need more than 350,000 new care workers.

This will never happen unless we provide central public funding to allow Labour’s Fair Pay Agreement in social care to raise care worker wages above poverty levels.

Conference, stand with social care workers, no matter where they come from.

Support this Composite ✊

Few social care workers are leaving — but that doesn’t mean the system is working.
Too many are staying because they feel trapped, not supported. Low pay, insecure contracts, and burnout are driving people to breaking point.
And without a mandated safe staffing level set by the CQC, both service users and staff are being put at risk.
We don’t just need to “keep staff” — we need to value them with fair pay, secure work, safe staffing, and respect.
No one should feel stuck in care. People should want to stay because it’s a job worth doing.

No one working in care should be looking over their shoulder.
We should feel supported, respected, and trusted.
This article is a stark reminder of the pressures facing care workers across the country. Too often, colleagues are left feeling scrutinised and judged, instead of encouraged and backed up to do their best.
Caring is demanding, vital work. We need a culture that values staff, gives us the right resources, and focuses on learning and support rather than blame.
Together, we can call for the change our sector desperately needs — where carers are empowered to deliver the best for those we support, without fear or unnecessary pressure.

New figures reveal that care workers in the UK have suffered nearly 6,500 violent attacks over the past five years—incidents serious enough to force them off work. These statistics aren’t just numbers; they represent devoted individuals who support our most vulnerable citizens, yet find themselves facing aggression and fear on the job.

Why this matters…
• Many carers work alone in people’s homes or busy environments, facing unpredictable risks with little protection.
• These workers are already stretched thin, delivering vital services under immense pressure.
• Such violence not only affects their physical safety, but damages their mental health, job satisfaction, and retention, making the entire care system more fragile.

What we can’t ignore:
• The safety and wellbeing of care workers must be treated as a societal priority.
• Better training, support, and legal protections are urgently needed.
• It’s on employers, policymakers, and communities to develop stronger safeguards, and help carers feel valued and secure.

To all the carers out there: we see you. We appreciate your dedication. And more than thanks, you deserve safety, respect, and support.

🙏 Let’s stand together to demand better protections for our carers, and build a care system where those who care for others aren’t left carelessly at risk.

Hard-working staff have reported facing daily violence while trying to care for their patients, as a survey by the GMB union found 52% had been physically assaulted at work
