Alderman Prem Goyal CBE and Alderman The Hon. Tim Levene have been elected at Guildhall today to serve as the Sheriffs of the City of London for 2026–27, taking office on 28 September.

The office of Sheriff of the City of London, a pre-requisite to becoming Lord Mayor, is one of the oldest in existence and dates to the Middle Ages. The Sheriffs’ modern-day duties include supporting the Lord Mayor in his or her civic roles and serving as ambassadors for the UK’s financial and professional services industry by promoting Great Britain as a place in which to do business.

Based at the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) during their year in office, the Sheriffs also support His Majesty’s Judges by promoting the importance of the English rule of law to businesses, schools, diplomats, charities, the City Livery, and leading arts figures.

The City of London powers the UK economy, supporting 676,000 workers and 24,000 businesses, generating £109 billion in output, and £1.3 billion in business rates, and a major share of the FPS sectors’ £110 billion annual tax revenue.
