Preserving the Glorious History of the Khas Civilization
The Khas nation (Jaati) is one of the most ancient civilizations in Nepal, existing alongside the Kirat civilization. Both Khas and Kirat communities have coexisted in this territory for over 6000 years, as documented in Hindu civilization texts. The Khas people have a long and glorious history in Nepal, with their own script (Khasasto), language, customs, traditions, beliefs, food habits, nature-based faith, and indigenous religious practices. Despite undergoing significant Sanskritization, many of their original customs and traditions remain intact.
Khas Beliefs and Practices
The Khas people primarily practice nature worship, venerating elements such as the sun, land, air, water, and sky. A key symbolic aspect of their rituals is the sound of the Dhami (priest), who gestures toward the sky, representing the sound of zero level. Another significant symbol is the Chamar, the tail of the Chauri G*i (highland cow). The Khas priest, known locally as Dhami or Dangi, continues to lead worship practices, which have survived despite increasing Sanskritization.
