Meet Gorgeous Bear!
💙🧸🐈⬛️💙🧸🐈⬛️💙🧸🐈⬛️💙🧸🐈⬛️
We received a call from the metropolitan police of a urgent case of a cat found living in a property being used for illicit activities. They were closing the property up and Dear Bear needed help immediately.
I got straight on the phone to arrange cat carrier and overnight stay for Bear until i could collect him.
Thanks to the wonderful Gowri at GWN for loaning a cat carrier and Cottmandene vets who took care of his overnight stay. Having network of people helps in situations like this and all went to plan. The Police officer was amazing and so kind. Bear was collected the following day from the vets by us.
Considering his background Bear was extremely friendly, calm and affectionate in relatively good condition on checking him over. But within hours it was clear his extreme thirst was off the scale nothing like I had seen before in 26 years of rescuing not interested in food first just literally bowls of water drunk in minutes!.
Was he diabetic or had kidney issues but still behaviour way beyond normal even for regular diabetes and kidney issues.
We had Bear fully blood tested and urine expressed which was so clear !.
He was urinating in his bed, using two large litter trays, including peeing on incontinence pads constantly. He must of been feeling exhausted of peeing and drinking how long he had been like this we have no idea.
After his tests came back he was diagnosed with
Central Diabetes insipidus (CDI) a rare endocrine disorder even our vets have only come across this once before in his career caused by a deficiency of the antidiuretic hormone (ADH/vasopressin).
The brain (hypothalamus/pituitary gland) does not produce enough ADH due to congenital defect.
The kidneys fail to respond to ADH properly.
Key symptoms extreme thirst and producing massive amounts of very dilute urine with low specific gravity.
The treatment for this is desmopressin in the form of a nasal spray but administered twice daily in one eye. Administering desmopressin causes the cat's urine to concentrate and stops the excessive drinking and urination, it confirms central diabetes insipidus. If the kidneys do not respond, it points toward nephrogenic diabetes insipidus or another underlying medical condition.
It was incredible within 3 hours of administering his first dose his thirst and frequency of urinating decreased by 80%. We are so relieved for dear Bear but he still is not out of the woods he will be monitored over next couple of weeks and we pray he will be ready for adoption or long-term foster home soon.
Bear still needs his vaccinations and dental which will be further costs but we need him to be stable first. He is approximately 8 to 9 years old.
He really is the most adorable boy and would make a lovely companion. Because of his condition he would need to be placed in an spacious indoor home, or a home with a catio or catproof fencing.
Sadly
Our funds are depleting as every cat we seem to take in is not straight forward this past 18 months and we really need your help. Our bills are just increasing and to maintain the care of our existing long-term and short-term foster cats is becoming more and more difficult 😪.
Please donate if you can every penny counts and we would be so grateful for your support 💙🙏 😽
