A Thursday morning in Plymouth. A Memory Cafe with proper coffee ☕

Conversation that doesn't have to go anywhere. Someone who already knows your name, and your wife's, and what she used to do for a living.

Memory Matters runs Memory Cafes, Cognitive Stimulation Therapy groups and Moments Cafe in the centre of Plymouth. Every one built around people living with dementia and the people caring for them.

We fund Memory Matters so there are more mornings like this one 🫶

Caring for someone living with dementia is hard enough up close. From a distance, it brings a different kind of worry. 😞

"My sister sweeps in like a royal visit. Not enough warning. Creating work for me to host her. Full of opinions and off again. Dad loves it but I'm on my knees."

In her new blog, Professor June Andrews gives honest, practical guidance for anyone supporting a loved one from far away. How to be genuinely useful to the person doing the day-to-day caring. What to put in place before a crisis. And why "possible" doesn't always mean "feasible" when the journey takes most of a day.

Her reminder for anyone feeling guilty: you are human, and you cannot provide emergency cover across hundreds of miles. What you can do still matters.

This week is , and the theme is Building Carer Friendly Communities.

The idea is simple enough. Places, services and people that notice carers and do not leave them to cope alone.

The scale of it is easy to underestimate.

Carers UK found that 57% of carers feel overwhelmed often or always. Around 5.8 million people in the UK are caring for someone, and many are looking after a partner, a parent or a friend living with dementia.

No one should have to learn how to care alone.

That is why we fund partners like Dementia Carers Count who offer free practical courses, honest information, and time with people who understand what caring really involves.

To see what that support looks like across the partners we fund follow the link 👉 https://ow.ly/ShHM50Z8SZF

Carers Week runs from 8 to 14 June.

A bad night isn't just about feeling tired the next day 😴

When you sleep, especially in deep sleep, your brain clears out its waste. That includes beta-amyloid, the protein linked to Alzheimer's disease. Think of it as an overnight cleaning service for the brain. Miss enough nights, and the waste starts to build up.

Later this month it's , and few things shape our wellbeing more than sleep.

Research shows that chronic sleep problems in midlife may raise your risk of developing dementia later.

So sleep isn't only rest. It's maintenance for our brain 🧠

Professor June Andrews explains why sleep matters, and shares five simple things that can help people living with dementia sleep better.

🎵 Breakthrough Research: Partner Focus

The Science Behind Music and Dementia Care

Evidence from our partner Music for My Mind reveals the powerful impact of personalised music for people living with dementia. Their research programme is helping us better understand music's role in dementia care through ⤵

🧠 Reminiscence Bump Research
Published findings show we're most attuned to music from ages 13-19, regardless of current age - crucial for creating effective personalised playlists

📊 Innovative Technology
Partnering with King's College London on fMRI brain imaging studies to understand the neurological mechanisms behind music's impact

🎯 Evidence-Based Care
Moving beyond anecdotal evidence with well-conducted clinical trials and machine learning analysis of emotional responses

The programme demonstrates music's ability to enable non-verbal communication for people with advanced dementia, benefiting not just individuals but their families and carers too.

This research is vital for advancing dementia care and supporting the wellbeing of everyone affected by dementia.

What is the price of the game?

Steve Thompson won the Rugby World Cup with England in 2003. He cannot remember it.

He is not an outlier.

Ryan Jones, Wales captain, diagnosed at 41. Alix Popham, 33 caps for Wales. Carl Hayman, an All Black. Five members of England’s 1966 World Cup winning football team developed dementia.

The science is now harder to argue with. The FIELD study at Glasgow followed 7,676 former professional footballers. They were 3.5 times more likely to die from neurodegenerative disease. A 2024 update ruled out lifestyle factors. The 2025 UCL study found former players’ p-tau217 levels were 17.6% higher than controls.

Sport and exercise are strong evidence-based ways to reduce dementia risk. The benefits of physical activity are real. That is not in question.

What is in question is whether the people running contact sports have done their homework on long-term risk, and whether parents have been given enough information to weigh it.

A new piece on the blog: CTE, dementia, and the question contact sports can no longer avoid.

End of life care for people with dementia has not always been well understood.

Dementia is progressive. It is life limiting. And until there is a cure, the focus has to be on living as well as possible for as long as possible.

Fewer hospital admissions in the final months. More people cared for in familiar surroundings. Fewer treatments that burden without benefit.

Professor June Andrews on the research that is replacing uncertainty with understanding.
