That’s why we fund life-changing eye research to deepen our understanding of eye disease and help bring new treatments to patients faster than ever before. It’s why we invest in innovative education programmes to help train the next generation of eye specialists. And it’s why we support staff, equipment and new ideas at Moorfields

Eye Hospital to help patients across the country access world-class eye care. Ultimately, everything we do aims to make a difference to the lives of people with sight loss - because we believe that people’s sight matters.

Jay was diagnosed with retinosis pigmentosa (RP), a name for a group of conditions affecting retinal tissue, causing them to waste away, when he was 12 years old. Though he struggled to fully understand and be open about his condition when he was younger, Jay now feels comfortable sharing his experience as a visually impaired person with RP.

Jay also became a member of our team at Moorfields Eye Charity in October 2025 through an internship created in partnership with Thomas Pocklington Trust. His involvement with us didn't start there – Jay and his family have also taken part in Eye to Eye, our annual fundraising walk, to show their support for Moorfields.

"Working at Moorfields Eye Charity is particularly meaningful to me. It connects my personal experience with a wider purpose - supporting others who are affected by eye conditions and helping to raise awareness." – Jay

You can also find plain-text versions of the messages below.

Message 1: To Edna from Paediatrics at City Road.
"This was our first experience of Moorfields at Croydon. We both worked in the NHS for years - and want to say a special thank you to Edna who was ever so kind, caring and supportive. She was very attentive providing lovely toys and helping children to interact with and enjoy playing with them.
The wide selection of toys and craft was so special for a good range of ages and you could see the children’s faces light up through engaging with these. Edna also assisted with some thorough prep for our little girl before walking with us to theatre. She was particularly sweet and offered compassion upon leaving our daughter to go in to theatre.

I appreciated her kind words, reassurance and level of support. Thank you Edna for being so lovely to me. Thank you to all the rest of the team too, they all go above and beyond for both patients and carers, they are all superstars. Thank you for providing such a brilliant and efficient service.
can confidently say that this was the most efficient and well-designed process. The staff were universally professional and well-trained. This is exactly how the NHS should be. Thank you all."

Message 2: To the team in General Ophthalmology at City Road.
"Thank you to all the staff who saw my 90 year old mother in law today. You were all very caring and compassionate."

Message 3: To Maira in Contact Lenses at City Road.
"Just a big thank you for being so perfect, you gave me the right information and told me everything that was going on the whole time making me feel at ease.
The way you explain what was happening, the soft tone in you voice made the whole situation easier then ever imagined thank you. ☺️ keep being you you’re amazing."

Presenting at the next NIHR Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre Coffee Hour will be Professor Jugnoo Rahi, Professor of Ophthalmic Epidemiology at UCL GOS Institute of Child Health and Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

She leads the Vision and Eyes Group at UCL studying visual health and vision impairment in childhood using population health sciences. Her research aims to improve outcomes for babies, children and young people with eye conditions and/or vision impairment through better clinical care and treatment, better services, and better policies.

The aim is also to improve the visual health of all children and raise the profile of visual health and vision impairment within the general health landscape. Prof. Rahi will discuss her recent and current projects, some of which we have supported as part of our joint fundraising scheme with the Medical Research Foundation which you can learn more about here: https://moorfieldseyecharity.org.uk/news/3m-boost-for-childrens-eye-health-research?utm_campaign=coffeehour&utm_medium=organicsocial&utm_source=facebook

There will also be a free coffee and pastry for you to enjoy! So come along and chat about research into eye care that is important to you.
