Groundswell Project

Groundswell Project Groundswell is about building empathy in communities. Helping neighbours find out that they are more the same than they are different.

When we understand each other it becomes harder to mock and hate and easier to band together on the things that matter

Our managing director Ghaffar Hussain and Financial Freedom Officer Kanika Singh attended the annual Oslo Freedom Forum last week. This has been an important event for Groundswell for a number of years and the theme of this year’s event was ‘Dismantling Dictatorship’, which is very relevant to much of the work we do.

It was a great opportunity to meet with activists from around the world and talk about shared solutions to common problems. It was also a chance to learn about the latest developments in Freedom Technology - tools that allow people to express themselves freely regardless of censorship

Radicalisation very rarely starts with violence but is instead borne out of a desire for belonging and connection with a ‘them versus us’ ideology, blaming someone else for our problems. Listen to our managing director Ghaffar as he explains what is driving extremist narratives and what we at Groundswell believe needs to be done to counter it. We have been working with Isle of Wight Council on a series of training sessions. Find out more about our bespoke training programmes at groundswellproject.org or email us at [email protected]

“When young people feel heard, they stop looking for answers in dangerous places”. Listen to our adviser Anita as she explains what we believe is the real problem behind the issue of young people accessing harmful content online. We have been working with Isle of Wight Council on a series of training sessions to highlight some of the ways of preventing young people from ending up in dangerous places online. “Strengthening communities for today and laying the foundations for a more united, compassionate and hopeful society for generations to come.”

This is what Groundswell stands for and it couldn’t have been said with any more clarity than in this foreword to our 2025/26 impact report written by our late founder Hadiya Masieh. Three and a half months on from her passing, her memory is still driving everything we do, and at a time when the world needs it the most. Our 2025/26 Impact Report setting out the work that we’re doing in four areas across the country is now published and we’re excited to share it with you.

We were funded by to deliver a cohesion and peace building programme in Lewisham, Manchester, Glasgow and Luton, through a network of Community Connectors.

Our latest report sets out our year in numbers as well as focusing on case studies in each of the four areas, showing the impact they’re having on the ground, at a time when across the world we need to be promoting togetherness and inclusion to combat the hate and division that is present in so many settings.

Check out our report via our link in Instagram bio - and let us know what you think! We’re also always looking for partners in these areas and are able to deliver bespoke training packages for your needs - get in touch by emailing [email protected]

Yesterday, Groundswell had the pleasure of hosting a meeting with representatives from the Woven Foundation, an organisation currently spearheading fantastic initiatives across East Africa centred on human rights education. Their dedication to empowering local communities through human rights education and advocacy is truly impressive, and it was a privilege to learn more about their recent impact on the ground.

Our conversation focused on moving beyond simple networking toward a model of deeper collaborative working. We explored several strategic avenues for partnership, including:

Resource Sharing: Exchanging proven methodologies for high-impact educational content creation.

Cultural Adaptation: Sharing specialised tips on how to effectively tailor existing toolkits and materials to suit diverse cultural and linguistic contexts.

Knowledge Exchange: Aligning our long-term goals to ensure that human rights resources are not only accessible but also deeply resonant with the communities they serve.

We are excited about the potential for this synergy to amplify our collective reach and effectiveness.

The Groundswell Team recently traveled to the historic city of Oxford to participate in the prestigious Skoll World Forum.

Throughout the week, our representatives engaged in deep, meaningful dialogues with a diverse array of like-minded innovators and social entrepreneurs. These individuals traveled from every corner of the globe, collectively representing the heartbeat of the modern non-profit sector and a shared vision for global progress.

The festival schedule was packed with thought-provoking seminars and collaborative workshops designed to tackle the most pressing issues of our time. Attendees explored a broad spectrum of critical themes, ranging from the urgent necessity of environmentalism and the global fight for women’s rights to the complexities of systemic healthcare reform. Additionally, the forum provided a unique platform to discuss evolving social dynamics, such as the shifting landscape of modern masculinity and its role in building a more equitable future.

Our Community Connector in Glasgow, Adeel, attended a special inaugural screening of the movie Everybody to Kenmure Street, which tells the story of the 2021 community action to stop two residents from Pollokshields from being removed by a Home Office immigration raid. The movie won the Special Jurors Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and Adeel is pictured with a group including Tabassum Niabet from the active Bowling Green Project as well as human rights lawyer Amer Anwar. Adeel’s work in Pollokshields has been integral to peace building and community cohesion in Glasgow
