Thank you to everyone who joined our Zoom meeting on Wednesday, where we explored books as a theme, challenged ourselves with “evocative” as word of the day and tackled literature-tinged table topics.

Thank you also to our two main speakers for the evening. One of our newer members Alice spoke about awareness of the British Library and how to ensure the valuable works there are more than “old tomes catching dust on a shelf”, while Jess explored the difference between mentoring and coaching.

Our next in-person meeting at the Redmond Centre will be on March 25th at 7pm:

We had another successful in-person meeting last week, with new member Adam exploring philosophies for life for us and Elliot speaking from the Successful Club Series on how to ensure our club is never "unassuming" (our Word of the Day). And we have two more planned from our members Jess and Alice at our online meeting on March 11th at 7pm! Sign up here:

After that, our next in-person meeting at the Redmond Centre will be on March 25th at 7pm:

We’ve had an “auspicious” start to 2026 (one of our “words of the day”) so far this year. This week in our online session our impromptu Table Topics were hypotheticals (how would you sell an invisibility cloak that only works at night, or market “diet water”).

We also had two “whimsical” (another word of the day) evaluation and feedback speeches. Vincent Wiegmann treated us to his presentation on “an arboretum of attention”, exploring different types of trees in a local park, while Rachel Stott explored the history of the sea shanty on the fifth anniversary of Nathan Evans’ rendition of “The Wellerman” going viral during lockdown.

This followed twin icebreaker speeches from new members Catalina Cotoara and Adam Tyson in our January in-person meeting, where we were also excited to be joined by seven guests dipping their toe into Toastmasters. And in what feels like an age ago now, in our January Zoom session Odysseas Diakakis started us off with his “Small tips for a Happier New Year!”.

Manor House Speakers is part of the Toastmasters International UK & Ireland network of public speaking clubs, and we meet two Wednesdays a month, on Zoom (second Wednesdays) and in-person at the Redmond Community Centre, Woodberry Down, N4 2HF (fourth Wednesdays). It's a great place to work on your speaking or leadership skills in a tight-knit community environment that’s part of a wider network, and learn from other members and most welcome guests.

If you want to come and meet us, our next in-person meeting will be on February 25th at 7pm:

Wednesday saw our very last meeting of a packed 2025, where our Toastmaster Adam Tyson set us a theme of the "spirit of Christmas" and "festive" as our word of the day, and Odysseas Diakakis led us in Table Topics on a Christmas theme as well. Hannah Bays served as our Timekeeper and Rachel Stott and Te Manu Boynton as evaluators of the speeches we heard together.

Elliot Bidgood then gave a 3-minute "social speech" task towards his Dynamic Leadership pathway, using it as a 'Christmas Toast' to reflect and explore lessons from the club this year.

In our latest in-person meeting November 26th, we were thrilled to hear two prepared level-three speeches and then proceeded to a vibrant and varied table topics session focused on "Black Friday". While our grammarian for the evening Vincent Wiegmann set us "coveted" as our word of the day, no one had to "covet" a vote for Best Table Topics Speaker, as everyone competing received votes from other members (including three guests we were lucky to have joining us).

Jessica Bays tackled her 'Connect with Storytelling' task with an intriguing tale about her adventures in the mountains of Transylvania, while following on from the recent Poppy Appeal, Elliot Bidgood spoke about the work of the Royal British Legion for a 'Connect with Your Audience' task.

It's been a packed year for Manor House Speakers. But as we head into the festive period, there's also still one last chance to join us in December 2025 to work on your public speaking and leadership skills.
