Postoperative Delirium (POD) is a common but frequently under-recognised complication associated with poorer patient outcomes, increased mortality, and longer hospital stays. Although national guidance recommends routine screening, putting this into practice remains a challenge.
Shubham Dave, a medical student entering his final year at Imperial College London, will present a quality improvement project conducted alongside the PACU team at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital as part of the Anaesthesia and Critical Care BSc programme. The project has recently been published in BMJ Open Quality and focused on improving perioperative delirium assessment through sustainable and practical interventions.
This webinar will showcase how PDSA methodology and behaviour change strategies were used to develop and embed a postoperative delirium screening programme within the Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
Key outcomes included:
✔️ Screening rates increasing from 2.3% to 71.6%
✔️ Identification of previously unrecognised cases of POD
✔️ Significant improvements in nursing confidence and guideline clarity
