Join The Revd Canon Dr Alison Joyce, Rector of St Bride's, and St Bride's Choir for this week's reflection in words and music.

We open this week with Sir Charles Villiers Stanford's uncomplicated but charming setting of the poem "How beauteous are their feet" by Dr Isaac Watts, the 18th century English hymnist and theologian.

The reading is from the Gospel of Matthew when Jesus speaks to the people of things that defile. Alison then reflects on this challenging passage by first looking back to its origins in Mark's Gospel.

We close with the hymn "Eternal Ruler of the ceaseless round" by the American minister John Chadwick. It was written for the graduating class of the Divinity School in Cambridge Massachusetts in 1864.

Join The Revd Canon Dr Alison Joyce, Rector of St Bride's, and St Bride's Choir for this week's reflection in words and music.

The opening anthem this week is by Charles Wood. It sets the poem "Expectans expectavi"
by Charles Sorley who was a First World War poet who was killed at the Battle of Loos in 1915, aged just 20. Wood wrote his setting in 1919 shortly after the death of his own son who was serving in the Royal Air Force. The intense and yearning harmonies reveal Wood at the height of his Romantic church music writing.

The parables continue in our reading; this week, the parable of the mustard seed. Alison reflects on her personal aversion to risk, but risks must be taken as only the person who risks is truly free to grow and to love.

We close with the hymn "King of glory, King of peace" which sets words by the English priest and metaphysical poet, George Herbert.

We remember on our Journalists' Altar two familiar voices from television and radio who died a week apart, both aged 68: Dermot Murnaghan and Edward Stourton. Both were journalists, news anchors and presenters who were trusted, respected and much-loved. We pray for them, their families, friends and colleagues. May they rest in peace.

Sir Edward Bairstow was reportedly the rudest Yorkshireman from a county famed for its blunt speaking but that is not apparent in his beautiful anthem "Blessed city, heavenly Salem". Hear it at this Sunday at 5:30pm then join us for drinks and nibbles after the service at our monthly .

Bairstow wrote the piece in 1914. It sets words from a seventh-century hymn and crafts the plainsong melody for that text into a series of six contrasting variations. The anthem draws to a close with a beautiful, yearning solo soprano descant which together with the concluding tierce de Picardie provides one of the most entrancing moments in sacred choral music.

David Willey was a foreign correspondent for almost 70 years, more than 50 of those for the BBC. He has died aged 93 and we remember his long service on our Journalists' Altar.

In 1971, after training with Reuters and postings in Africa and Asia with the BBC, he became the News Rome correspondent. He covered the papacies of five popes and was a much esteemed chronicler of life in the Vatican and in the Eternal City. In 2003 he was awarded an OBE for his services to broadcast journalism which had inspired generations of foreign correspondents. May he rest in peace.

A candle burns on our Journalist's Altar in memory of Dermot Murnaghan – journalist and presenter – who has died aged 68.

Murnaghan was a trusted figure on the nation's screens delivering the news with a calm and affable authority. He worked across all the major TV channels and was a long-time lead anchor for Sky News. He earned a Royal Television Society award and the title Newscaster of the Year. Beyond the newsroom he hosted the popular quiz show, Eggheads, The Big Story, Britain’s Most Wanted, and the podcast Legends of News, celebrating the figures who shaped modern broadcasting.

We pray for him, his family, friends and colleagues. May he rest in peace.

A memorial service giving thanks for his life will be held at St Bride's the for his friends and colleagues later this year.
