Harvest Sunday this week! St Bride's Orchestra are joining in the celebration on Sunday morning at 11am, accompanying the choir in Schubert's much-celebrated "Mass in G" which he wrote aged just 18.

Choral Evensong at 5:30pm includes a rare chance to hear William Walton’s setting of "Cantico del sole" – a hymn in praise of Nature and God’s Creation, written by St Francis of Assisi as he recovered from illness in the glorious hills of Umbria.

William Byrd was a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal in the court of Elizabeth I. As a composer he faced the stifling restrictions imposed by the early Protestant church. Fortunately Elizabeth wanted the music at her Chapel Royal to reflect the splendour and majesty of the English throne, so Byrd had some musical freedom which he fully expressed in the most wonderful and exuberant anthem, "Sing joyfully", which you can hear at Choral Evensong.

The setting for the morning Choral Eucharist by William Walton will be welcome if you are in a rush – it's his Missa brevis (short mass) which he described as "very brevis" but that does not distract from its quality. One of the anthems is a familiar setting of the "Panis angelicus" by Cesar Frank arranged for St Bride's by Andrew Gant, formerly a member of the St Bride's Choir, who followed in the footsteps of William Byrd by serving as a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal.

Time for another special "Sermon in Music" from St Bride's Choir – replacing a spoken sermon – at Choral Evensong this Sunday. This week it features Mendelssohn's mini-cantata "Hear my prayer" for choir and soprano solo. It concludes with one of the most popular of all choral pieces and most beautiful of tunes, "O for the wings of a dove!" – a prayerful evocation of a faraway place of peace and rest.

Music for Choral Eucharist in the morning is centred on Vaughan Williams' Mass in G minor. He may have been an atheist, but the emotional impact following his service in the First World War and his respectful borrowing of techniques from his musical forebears lends a deep spirituality to the work.

Plus there's a glorious polyphonic setting of "Panis angelicus" by the seventeenth century Portuguese composer, João Lourenço Rebelo.

Join The Revd Canon Dr Alison Joyce, Rector of St Bride's, and St Bride's Choir for this week's reflection in words and music.

We begin our reflection with one of Robert White's hauntingly beautiful settings of "Christe, qui lux es et dies" which is a hymn for Compline, the final service of the daily liturgical cycle. The opening verses set the pattern of its prayerful tone:

"O Christ, who art the Light and Day
Thou drivest darksome night away;
We know thee as the Light of light
Illuminating mortal sight.

All holy Lord, we pray to thee,
Keep us tonight from danger free;
Grant us, dear Lord, in thee to rest,
So be our sleep in quiet blessed."

Alison recalls a woman planting bulbs despite knowing she would not live to see them bloom – choosing to spend some of her last hours planting them as a parting gift for others to enjoy. Alison goes on to reflect on the story of Jonah in today's reading, recognising in both that striving to be a blessing to others can be its own reward.

Our closing hymn – "Glory to Thee, my God this night" – echoes many of the themes of White's anthem. The words form one of a set of three hymns which Bishop Thomas Ken wrote for Wi******er College and is sung to the tune commonly known as Tallis' Canon.

Some musical treats in store this Sunday. The St Bride's Orchestra are in attendance for our celebratory Inspire! Sunday service in the morning, accompanying St Bride's Choir in a performance of Dvořák's Mass in D. The work was commissioned for the opening of a new chapel at Lužany Castle – the home of his friend Josef Hlávka. Dvořák was unaccustomed to writing for the small scale forces the space required but he seemed satisfied with the outcome, writing “I am pleased to announce that I have finished the work and that I am supremely pleased with the result."
