IWGB - Independent Workers Union of Great Britain The Independent Workers’ union of Great Britain is a grassroots member-led union. Since then, we have grown to thousands of members across the country.

The IWGB was founded in 2012 by Latin American cleaners organising for better working conditions. From outsourced facilities staff to gig economy workers, IWGB members are key workers on the frontline of the fight against poverty pay and insecure work. The IWGB organises couriers, cycling instructors, charity workers, yoga teachers, cleaners, security officers, video game workers, nannies, university workers, foster carers, private hire drivers and more. Low-paid migrant workers started the union and we believe that migrant workers are a vital part of the labour movement. After Brexit, standing up for migrants’ rights is more important than ever. Through strikes, legal action and public pressure, we’re fighting for workers’ rights and decent pay and conditions. The IWGB is taking on the corporate giants of the gig economy like Deliveroo and Uber. Gig economy companies deny workers basic rights like the minimum wage, health and safety protections and sick pay. In 2020, the IWGB defeated the UK Government in the High Court over health and safety rights for gig economy workers. We campaign against the exploitative practice of outsourcing, where workers are employed by a third-party company instead of the institution where they actually work. Outsourcing institutionalises inequality and unaccountability. We’re organising to turn the tide at universities across London. The IWGB Legal Department handles hundreds of cases every year to respond to issues that members are facing. From workplace bullying to illegal deduction of wages, if members are facing injustices at work, then the union has their back. The IWGB has also been at the forefront of strategic litigation challenging bogus self-employment, winning rights and backdated pay for gig economy workers. Democracy is central to how we organise. Our campaigns are led by members and we collectively work out our strategies to win. The branches of the union lead on campaigning for better pay and conditions.

This summer’s World Cup was just the warm up for the IWGB 5-a-side football tournament. For a few hours, everyone swapped organising for some friendly competition on a recent sun-soaked Saturday afternoon of action, fun and solidarity. If you think about it, there’s nothing that brings people together like the beautiful game. All were welcomed and represented on the pitch. After the final whistle, it was nothing but good sportsmanship at the post-match meal.

Durante unas horas, todos dejaron a un lado las tareas de organización para participar en una competencia amistosa en una reciente tarde de sábado llena de sol, acción, diversión y solidaridad. Si lo piensas bien, no hay nada que una más a la gente que este hermoso deporte. Todos fueron bienvenidos y estuvieron representados en la cancha. IWGB member and private hire driver Julius Mugabo has been granted permission for a landmark legal case against Transport for London over their widespread failures to renew private hire driver licenses, which pushed almost 18,000 London drivers out of work.

It is only thanks to sustained protesting by IWGB drivers who united for justice, that this issue has been brought to national attention and will now be heard in the High Court. This is just the latest win in our ongoing campaign, which has also seen drivers secure from TfL short-term, emergency licenses, additional processing staff, an acknowledgement of failures, and an end to the licensing backlog.

We will continue to fight until we see permanent reform of TfL’s system and get back every penny drivers are owed.

The IWGB Private Hire Drivers Union stormed a City Hall transport meeting yesterday to make their feelings known about driverless cars being rushed out in London.

As it currently stands, driverless cars are walking us blindly into huge job losses, congested streets, a passenger safety emergency and a transfer of power from the hands of Londoners to the hands of tech execs.

Yesterday drivers called on Transport for London to show some backbone and slam the brakes on driverless cars. Stopping the rollout is possible: their implementation has already been halted in places like New York, Texas and more.

Together we can protect public safety, protect drivers’ livelihoods and protect our say over our city!
