IWGB - Independent Workers Union of Great Britain

IWGB - Independent Workers Union of Great Britain The Independent Workers’ union of Great Britain is a grassroots member-led union. Since then, we have grown to thousands of members across the country.

The IWGB was founded in 2012 by Latin American cleaners organising for better working conditions. From outsourced facilities staff to gig economy workers, IWGB members are key workers on the frontline of the fight against poverty pay and insecure work. The IWGB organises couriers, cycling instructors, charity workers, yoga teachers, cleaners, security officers, video game workers, nannies, univers

ity workers, foster carers, private hire drivers and more. Low-paid migrant workers started the union and we believe that migrant workers are a vital part of the labour movement. After Brexit, standing up for migrants’ rights is more important than ever. Through strikes, legal action and public pressure, we’re fighting for workers’ rights and decent pay and conditions. The IWGB is taking on the corporate giants of the gig economy like Deliveroo and Uber. Gig economy companies deny workers basic rights like the minimum wage, health and safety protections and sick pay. In 2020, the IWGB defeated the UK Government in the High Court over health and safety rights for gig economy workers. We campaign against the exploitative practice of outsourcing, where workers are employed by a third-party company instead of the institution where they actually work. Outsourcing institutionalises inequality and unaccountability. We’re organising to turn the tide at universities across London. The IWGB Legal Department handles hundreds of cases every year to respond to issues that members are facing. From workplace bullying to illegal deduction of wages, if members are facing injustices at work, then the union has their back. The IWGB has also been at the forefront of strategic litigation challenging bogus self-employment, winning rights and backdated pay for gig economy workers. Democracy is central to how we organise. Our campaigns are led by members and we collectively work out our strategies to win. The branches of the union lead on campaigning for better pay and conditions.

🔥🔊🪩This Saturday 23 May, the IWGB Universities Branch held a solidarity fundraiser to support the workers leading the fight for safety, dignity and respect at the Royal College of Art at the iconic Piehouse Co-Op.

The heat was the perfect backdrop to party in solidarity with our comrades and dance the night away! From manning the BBQ, to spinning the decks, to buying a ticket, everyone made it a night to remember.

After more than 16 workers complained about abuse and harassment on the RCA campus, two of the union members leading the demands for safety were sacked. The money raised on Saturday will go towards supporting the workers fired for speaking up, as we keep up the fight demanding their reinstatement.

If you couldn’t make it down at the weekend, you can still support the cleaners’ fight by donating to the fundraiser in our bio!

“They have acted as if they have impunity, showing no respect for UK trade union law. Our multiple requests for cooperation, whether proposing in-person meetings or asking for the full evidence behind the dismissals, have been met with radio silence,” Alex Marshall, IWGB President said. “When Rockstar does respond, it’s with a shifting narrative that constantly contradicts itself.”

These comments come at the same time that three Scottish Labour MPs Chris Murray, Tracy Gilbert and Dr Scott Arthur raised concerns about Rockstar Games’ refusal to provide full evidence and properly engage in the legal process over alleged union-busting at the studio.

We swapped driving for change for marching for change as we tested out our freshly painted IWGB Private Hire Driver banner at London May Day.

Our yellow flags made their debut at the annual celebration of workers’ power, 100 years to the day of the 1926 General Strike, walking from Clerkenwell Green to Trafalgar Square.

May Day, with its traditions rooted in worker solidarity and unity, is the perfect opportunity to remember the wins as we march alongside other trade unions, political groups and campaigns

While many people take our movement’s victories for granted, any trade unionist knows just how out of reach winning can feel sometimes.

Many Private Hire Driver branch members can recall the pain and hardship caused by TfL’s handling of the recent license renewal process delays.

It was a dark time, leaving financial and emotional scars, with drivers unable to work, a totally avoidable failure of City Hall.

Light at the end of the tunnel came from our tireless organising, campaigning and mobilising.

Without all our hard work, the legal claim to secure proper compensation for drivers with the lawyers at Leigh Day wouldn’t exist.

More had to be done when Saqid Khan only offered drivers an insulting £500.

As we mount a campaign to get justice for Addison Lee drivers unable to make ends meet amid the war in the Middle East, we need these moments of reflection on our achievements more than ever.

Drive alone, march together.

🚗🌟⚡️The IWGB Private Hire Driver Branch x May Day 🚗🌟⚡️

📆 Monday 4th May
📍 Clerkenwell Green, London EC1
⏰ 12PM for a 1PM start

This Monday 4th May, we are swapping ‘driving for change’ for ‘marching for change’ at the London May Day March and Rally alongside workers from a diverse array of trade unions.

‼️ Bring your family and your friends, fellow drivers to Clerkenwell Green at 12pm.

Share this message far and wide in your networks‼️

Solidarity will be the word of the day as we will be forming a drivers bloc at the annual demonstration.

Each year, unionised workers take to the streets to honour the history of the labour movement and its achievements to come.

As a vital part of the landscape of modern trade unions, the IWGB Private Hire Drivers branch are getting in on the action.

Our workplaces and bosses might look different from conventional ones but we are still part of the movement. Instead of a traditional manager, we take on TfL, Addison Lee, Uber and others. Despite this, we know it’s all one struggle, one fight.

🔥Driving alone, marching together! No one left behind!🔥
