In his address at Monday's David Monis-Weston Lecture, Gareth Conyard spoke about choosing to push further for an effective professional development system, even as funding pressures led many organisations to step back. Gareth pointed to TDT's own research showing that 39% of all CPD currently has little or no impact, a reminder of how much further the profession still has to go, an ambition we're committed to carrying forward.

Dame Alison Peacock opened Monday evening's David Monis-Weston lecture by tracing the long-standing relationship between the Chartered College and the Teacher Development Trust, dating back to her time as a founding TDT trustee.

Dame Alison reflected on how, as TDT looked for support, the College was able to offer a home for its research and guidance, ensuring that more than a decade of work continues to shape practice in schools and trusts.

In her welcome remarks in Monday's lecture, Dame Alison Peacock recounted the long history between the Chartered College and the Teacher Development Trust, from her time as a founding TDT trustee through to TDT's research now finding a continued home within the College. She also looked ahead to the partnership's wider mission, including the College's work on increasing diversity in Initial Teacher Training, with the shared aim of helping the profession be the best it can be so that pupils flourish.

This short, free certification allows teachers, leaders and other school staff to extend their learning and demonstrate their expertise around the safe and effective use of AI in schools and colleges, focusing on the following areas:
• Understanding AI in education
• Interacting with generative AI in education
• Developing the safe use of generative AI in education
• Use cases of generative AI in education.

The certification is based on the Department for Education’s AI support materials, developed by Chiltern Learning Trust and free to access on the https://GOV.pulse.ly/r82jmthhd4 website. Successful eligible candidates also receive five credits towards Chartered Status. It is available to members and non-members.

The certification involves completing a multiple choice quiz (MCQ). The MCQ has been updated to reflect the updates made to the support materials released in May 2025.

Please note, if you accessed and completed the DfE support materials between June 2025 and 18th May 2026, you have until 30th June 2026 to complete the certification based on the previous support materials and MCQ.

Monday evening marked our first time hosting the David Monis-Weston Lecture, delivered in partnership with the Teacher Development Trust, who held the inaugural lecture last year.

Dame Alison Peacock, Gareth Conyard and Paul Mallaband from event sponsor Penrose Education opened the evening before Sufian Sadiq delivered the keynote, with Gareth reflecting on TDT's fourteen-year history and its future as part of the Chartered College.

Our new Increasing Diversity in Initial Teacher Training online course is now available to access to both members and non-members.

The course has been developed in partnership with Being Luminary and Chiltern Learning Trust and funded by Mission 44 .

Aimed at educators, leaders and mentors working in ITT in the UK, the course explores the systemic barriers faced by trainees from global majority backgrounds when applying for and completing training, and provides language, tools and frameworks for embedding equity in teacher training.
