💥 A Blast from Upper Belvedere’s Past 💥
Did you know that one of the most powerful explosions of Victorian Britain happened right on Upper Belvedere’s doorstep?
At around 6:40am on 1 October 1864, two gunpowder magazines on the Belvedere side of the Erith Marshes exploded with tremendous force. The blast was heard up to 50 miles away, and the shockwave was so strong that people in central London reportedly believed an earthquake had struck. The explosion left a huge crater, destroyed the surrounding buildings, and could be heard as far away as Cambridge and Guildford.
Remarkably, despite the scale of the disaster, the remote location of the gunpowder stores meant the loss of life was far lower than it might have been, with around 20 casualties reported.
Today, little remains to remind us of this dramatic event, but it remains one of the most extraordinary chapters in Belvedere’s history.
