Early warning systems only save lives if they reach the last mile. Too often, they don't.

On 23 June, we're launching the Strategic Roadmap for Localised Early Warning Systems - a collective framework for putting local actors at the centre of early warning and anticipatory action.

It was built with our members: 408 voices across 88 countries, six national workshops, and frontline Early Warning Champions shaping the direction.

Join our webinar to explore its vision and priority actions towards 2030, and how civil society, governments, donors and partners can regionalise it to reach the most at-risk communities before disasters strike.

Developed through our "Localising Early Warning Systems and Anticipatory Action Through CSOs" project, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, and the British Red Cross, with support from the Risk-informed Early Action Partnership.

Help preserve EM-DAT, the world’s collective disaster memory 🚨

Please take a moment to read this appeal from the team at EM-DAT, which, as a result of funding cuts, is under threat. Read the appeal and sign the letter below 👇

EM-DAT, the international disaster database hosted by CRED at UCLouvain, is facing an urgent funding crisis following the suspension of USAID support.

For decades, EM-DAT has been a key global reference on disasters and their human and economic impacts. It supports disaster risk reduction, humanitarian action, research, policy-making, and public awareness by providing reliable, open-access data across countries and over time.

Losing EM-DAT would mean losing a vital part of our collective disaster memory, just when independent disaster data are more important than ever.

An open letter written by EM-DAT users calls for urgent action to preserve this global public good. More than 4,000 people have already signed.

We invite the , , , , and communities to sign and share the letter:

That’s a wrap on the GNDR secretariat’s annual all-staff meeting in Istanbul!

Once a year, our global team gets to be in the same room. We used the time to reflect on the past year, think critically about how we can better support our network of members, and plan together for what comes next.

Special thanks to our brilliant National Focal Point for Turkey, Zeynep M. Sanduvac of Nirengi, who started the week by outlining the country’s approach to DRM and how Turkish GNDR members are collaborating to support their at risk communities.

We’re leaving Istanbul refreshed and even more motivated to serve our membership so that locally led resilience can be more than an aspirational tagline - it can be a global reality.

22/05/2026

We're looking for brilliant volunteers to help power GNDR's global network!

We're hiring!

We're looking for a talented Project Officer to support climate resilience work in Tonga and Kiribati - two island nations at the sharp end of rising seas and ecosystem disruption.

You'll be working with local partners Foundation for the People of the South Pacific (Kiribati) and Tonga Community Development Trust to deliver community-led Nature-Based Solutions: coastal restoration, agroecology, biodiversity conservation. The focus is on building the leadership and capacity of women, young people, and disabled people to protect and restore the ecosystems their communities depend on.

This is hands-on project delivery - coordinating implementation, supporting partners, ensuring quality, representing the work to stakeholders. You'll report to our Head of Programmes and work closely with national partners, civil society organisations, and local governments across the Pacific.

The deadline to apply is 28 May - for full information and details on how to apply, go to our website 👉 https://buff.ly/FkgJPTm

We're hiring!

We're looking for a new Regional Lead for Africa.

Disasters across the continent are accelerating faster than preparedness systems can keep up. This Senior Leadership Team role exists to close that gap - leading advocacy, managing projects, and mobilising our members across Africa toward locally-led resilience.

You'll need deep commitment to and climate action, proven ability to influence across sectors, and the cross-cultural fluency to move between grassroots civil society and institutional donors.

This role is remote and offered to candidates based in Africa.

Deadline: 27 May 2026, 12pm GMT+1.

"Earthquakes are one of nature's deadliest hazards. In seconds, they can turn homes into ruins, undo decades of progress and claim thousands of lives," said United Nations Secretary-General AntĂłnio Guterres, in his message for the first International Day in Memory of the Victims of Earthquakes, commemorated on 29 April each year.

In the first two decades of this century, earthquakes - and resulting tsunamis - were responsible for nearly 60 per cent of all disaster-related deaths.

But the shaking of the ground isn't what causes most fatalities. Most deaths result from collapsing homes, buildings and infrastructure that are not built to withstand seismic risk. This makes resilience-building through better planning, stronger enforcement of building codes, and greater risk awareness essential to reducing earthquake deaths and economic losses - and that work must be locally led.

Civil society organisations, rooted in the communities most at risk, are on the frontlines of this effort: raising awareness, holding governments to account, and ensuring that those who bear the greatest burden have a voice in the decisions that shape their safety.

When disaster strikes, local organisations are first to respond - but often the last to receive funding.

In this short film, four from Bangladesh, Bolivia, Cameroon and the Central African Republic reflect on what it takes to change that: simpler access, pre-arranged financing, and systems that actually reach the communities bearing the greatest risk.

These are the conversations we brought to our roundtable in Brussels last week and the ones that need to shape how disaster risk financing is designed, distributed and delivered.
