Mildmay Hospital

Mildmay Hospital London's specialist hospital for HIV and complex needs, providing care to people facing profound social challenges.

We also deliver life-saving health programmes and clinical training in east Africa. From our origins in the East End during the cholera outbreaks of the 1860s, Mildmay has always stood for care, dignity, and hope for those who need it most. From our first purpose-built hospital in Shoreditch in 1892 to today, we’ve always been a part of London’s changing health landscape. For nearly 40 years, we’v

e led the way in specialist HIV care - pioneering treatment and rehabilitation when few others would. And today, we continue to support people living with HIV and complex health conditions, while also offering life-changing care to those who are homeless and recovering from illness or injury. Since 1998, Mildmay has also had a huge impact overseas, delivering healthcare services to those in greatest need. We continue to support our local NGOS in Kenya and Uganda. In 2020, we began a ground-breaking service in the UK, providing step-down stabilisation and rehabilitation for people who are homeless or rough-sleeping and recuperating from illness or injury. In 2022, we launched our REBUILD Pathway - an innovative residential programme for people recovering post-detox and stabilising their lives. And in 2024, our legacy of HIV care and support for LGBTQ+ communities was recognised: one of London’s six Overground railway lines was named The Mildmay line - a symbolic tribute not only to our work, but also to the courage and commitment of all NHS staff past and present.

2025 marks 40 years since Mildmay was reborn as an independent charity following closure as an NHS 'cottage hospital' in the early 1980s. We’re still here, still healing, and still fighting for a future where no one is left behind. Follow us to stay connected, hear the stories that matter, and see the difference your support makes. Donate today to help us continue this vital work.

The World Cup begins today, and billions of people from every corner of the world are watching the same thing at the same time.

At Mildmay, we see that spirit of connection every day, in our patients, staff, volunteers and partners from across the globe.

Whichever team you're supporting - good luck and enjoy it!.

In Uganda, an estimated 150,000 children are living with HIV, and for treatment to work, antiretroviral therapy (ART) has to be taken every single day. For school‑age children, that can be complicated, stigmatising and, at times, frightening.

That’s why we’re proud to support “My Pill Box, My Health!”, a youth‑led project in Kassanda District developed with GILO Young Positives Foundation, a charity run by young people living with HIV themselves. This small, practical initiative helps schoolchildren manage their ART safely and discreetly, so they can focus on learning, friendships and growing up with confidence.

Through Mildmay’s Partner-led Small Project Fund, partnering with Mildmay Uganda , we back locally designed ideas like this that deliver real, rapid improvements in health, dignity and care. Modest grants, trusted local partners, and immediate benefits for children and communities.

Pride Month is a time to celebrate, remember and reflect.

At Mildmay, our history is deeply connected to the LGBTQ+ community and to the people affected by the AIDS crisis.

Today we're sharing a moving personal story from Patrick, one of our former volunteer chaplains, who recalls the stigma, loss, friendship and compassion he witnessed during those years.

His testimony reminds us that behind every chapter of history are real people, real relationships and acts of kindness that changed lives.

What happens to international healthcare projects when the funding comes to an end?

At Mildmay, we believe success means building systems that don't need us forever. From day one, we design our international programmes to be handed over to local leadership, just like our independent teams in Kenya and Uganda.

An article in The Guardian by an international aid veteran warns that global donors are creating a culture of dependency. Read our latest blog post to see how Mildmay's model stands apart and builds true, lasting sustainability: mildmay.org/post/why-mildmay-builds-for-local-ownership

Mildmay Hospital has been featured in Triple Helix, the magazine of the Christian Medical Fellowship (CMF).

The article tells our story: from caring for cholera victims in 1866, to becoming Europe's first AIDS hospice in 1988, to today's specialist services for people with complex HIV, homelessness, and substance dependence.

For 160 years, we've stepped into the hardest places - providing care that treats people as whole human beings: body, mind, and spirit.

This weekend, our CEO Geoff and trustee Peter represented Mildmay at CMF's national conference, connecting with healthcare professionals who value integrated, compassionate care.

We're grateful to CMF for recognising this work.

Today is International Nurses Day -12 May, Florence Nightingale's birthday.

At Mildmay, our nurses are at the heart of everything we do. They work with patients living with complex health and social needs, meeting them with skill, patience, and a steady belief that everyone deserves dignity and a chance to recover.

Mildmay's nursing legacy stretches back 160 years, and today we celebrate the nurses who continue that work every day.

Happy International Nurses Day 2026.

Today is the start of Mental Health Awareness Week and at Mildmay Hospital, we see every day that physical recovery and mental wellbeing go hand in hand.

Many of our patients are rebuilding their lives after severe illness, neurological injury, trauma, or complex HIV-related conditions. Recovery is not only physical - confidence, emotional wellbeing, dignity, and compassionate support matter too.

Mental wellbeing must be part of healthcare, not separate from it. Find out more at the Mental Health Foundation: https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/our-work/public-engagement/mental-health-awareness-week

Mildmay Hospital clinicians were proud to present pioneering work at the BHIVA - British HIV Association / British Association for Sexual Health and HIV joint conference this spring.

Research presented by our teams explored both the future of AI-supported HIV education and the life-changing impact of specialist HIV rehabilitation.

We are proud to continue contributing to innovation, dignity, recovery, and specialist care for people living with HIV.

Thanks to your donations, we've just sent over £20,000 to Uganda to help kickstart the Universal Fund and launch a new project helping schoolchildren take their HIV medication without stigma.

For the first time in over a year, the Universal Fund can begin supporting young people with education, training and healthcare again.

And with your help, we've funded the entire first year of My Pill Box, My Health! - a youth-led project providing 100 schoolchildren in Kassanda District with discreet pill organisers and wraparound support.

This is what your faithful support makes possible. Thank you for believing in our work in Uganda.
