As Muslims across the globe mark Eid al Fitr, this significant occasion offers not merely a celebration at the close of Ramadan, but a moment for sober reflection on the values that underpin the season: compassion, justice, and respect for human dignity.

In this spirit, we extend our warmest greetings to the Sahrawi people, whose steadfast pursuit of freedom and self-determination continues to command the respect of all who uphold the principles of human rights and international law.

This year’s Eid coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic a landmark of both historical and symbolic significance. It serves as a poignant reminder of the Sahrawi people’s enduring national identity and their resolute aspiration for full independence and internationally recognised selfdetermination. Observing Eid alongside this anniversary imbues the occasion with additional depth, combining celebration with reflection upon a protracted struggle for freedom and dignity.

For many decades, the Sahrawi people have endured displacement, uncertainty, and division. Yet their resilience and commitment to safeguarding their identity and fundamental rights remain unshaken. Their cause is grounded firmly in international law and the universally recognised principle that all peoples are entitled to determine their own destiny.

Eid al Fitr is also a reminder that perseverance in the face of adversity is never in vain, and that justice, though sometimes delayed, must never be denied. It is incumbent upon the international community to stand in solidarity with those whose rights have yet to be fully realised and to uphold fairness, accountability, and respect for human dignity.

As families and communities come together in celebration, it is only fitting to remember those who continue to face daily hardship. The Sahrawi people, like many others, merit the opportunity to live in peace, security, and dignity within their homeland.

It is our sincere hope that this Eid brings renewed optimism and strength to the Sahrawi people and encourages continued engagement by the international community toward a just, peaceful, and lasting resolution that respects their legitimate rights.

The British capital today witnessed a peaceful demonstration outside the Moroccan Embassy in solidarity with the people of Western Sahara. Protesters gathered to reaffirm their unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s inherent right to freedom and self-determination, as recognised under international law.

London, Adala UK, a British non-governmental organisation dedicated to documenting and raising awareness of human rights violations against the Sahrawi people in the Occupied Territories of Western Sahara, has formally written to Rt Hon Hamish Falconer MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, urging urgent diplomatic action to secure the release of Moroccan human rights defender Aziz Ghali.

Mr. Ghali, a Moroccan national, has long demonstrated extraordinary moral courage in defending the rights of the Sahrawi people, advocating for justice despite significant personal and political risks. His commitment to human rights transcends nationality, exemplifying solidarity with oppressed communities and unwavering dedication to universal principles of justice.

Currently, Mr. Ghali is detained by Israeli authorities following the interception of his humanitarian vessel, part of the “Flotilla of Steadfastness”, which aimed to deliver essential aid to Gaza via international waters. Reports from the Moroccan Human Rights Coalition indicate that he and fellow activist Abdelazim Ben Diraoui are on hunger strike and have been subjected to harsh conditions, including denial of legal representation, verbal and physical abuse, forced transfers, and deprivation of basic necessities.

In its letter, Adala UK called on the UK Government to:

Engage urgently with Israeli authorities to secure the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Ghali and Mr. Ben Diraoui;
Issue a public statement reaffirming the United Kingdom’s commitment to protecting human rights defenders and opposing unlawful detention of humanitarian actors.
“Aziz Ghali’s unwavering advocacy for the rights of the Sahrawi people, despite being Moroccan, reflects exceptional courage and moral integrity,” said Lyadasi, chair of Adala UK. “Adala UK stands firmly with him and calls on the UK Government to take decisive action to secure his immediate release.”

Adala UK continues to work with a growing network of activists across the region and in Morocco to document human rights violations and raise awareness of the injustices faced by the Sahrawi population. This letter represents a critical step in mobilising international attention and diplomatic intervention to protect human rights defenders.

Taleb Alisalem, known as Taleb Sahara on social media, is a courageous Sahrawi human rights defender who speaks out boldly against the ongoing Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara and the systemic repression of his people. Despite facing relentless smear campaigns led by Moroccan state-controlled media, Taleb continues to advocate for the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination as recognized by international law, including multiple UN resolutions and the International Court of Justice.

This campaign of defamation is not just a personal attack on Taleb but part of a broader strategy to silence Sahrawi voices calling for justice and freedom. The Moroccan media uses false accusations and disinformation to delegitimize him, aiming to erase the Sahrawi people's legitimate struggle from the global stage.

Freedom of expression and political dissent are protected rights under international human rights instruments such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders. Taleb’s activism is a vital expression of these rights, highlighting the continued denial of Sahrawi sovereignty by Morocco.

Adala UK stands firmly with Taleb Alisalem and all Sahrawi human rights defenders facing intimidation and repression. We call on the international community to uphold the Sahrawi people's rights and to hold accountable those who seek to silence their voices through propaganda and persecution.
