Paula was born in Tennessee, and has long since made the UK her home. She studied at the Royal College of Music, where she received the Tagore Gold Medal, presented to her by King Charles.
In 2025 she performed Hanna Glawari in The Merry Widow with Scottish Opera and Opera Holland Park. Other roles have included Cunégonde in Candide for Scottish Opera; Tsaritsa of Shemakha in The Golden Cockerel, Lucrezia in Lucrezia Borgia, Mimì in La bohème, Tosca, Elettra in Idomeneo, Pamina in The Magic Flute, Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, Despina in Così fan tutte, all for English Touring Opera; Donna Anna in Don Giovanni for Longborough Festival Opera; Eurydice in Orphée et Eurydice for IN Series Opera, Washington DC; and Eleonora in L’assedio di Calais in the Armel Opera Festival, Budapest.
Her concert highlights include Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall, Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No. 7 Antarctica with the Stavanger Symfonikor in Finland and with the Opera North Orchestra in the UK with Richard Farnes, Mahler 8 with David Hill and the Opera North Symphony Orchestra, Mahler 2, Strauss’s Four Last Songs, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Missa solemnis and Mass in C, Dvořák’s Te Deum, and Britten’s War Requiem with the Southampton Philharmonic and London Mozart Players.
She recently recorded Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine and Fiançailles pour rire with Sergey Rybin, to critical acclaim. Upcoming work includes a revival of Hanna Glawari in The Merry Widow for the Buxton Festival this summer. Paula will sing Nedda in Pagliacci for English Touring Opera’s forthcoming tour, which includes a performance at the Hackney Empire on Friday 10 April.
