The British Omani Society The British Omani Society is a charity that supports the close friendship between Britain and Oman.

The Society holds a number of events at 34 Sackville Street that bring together British and Omani members, friends and guests. We have a complete range of topics spanning history, culture, art, sport and exploration amongst many others. The New Generation Group (NGG) represent the younger Anglo-Omani members and also have a very active schedule of events.

Thank you to Dr Lawrence Ball for delivering a fascinating talk, Camels in a Cloud Forest: Pastoralism in the Dhofar Mountains. The research delved into the unique cloud forests of Dhofar, the role of pastoralism in sustaining local livelihoods, and the environmental challenges facing this fragile ecosystem. We were grateful for the opportunity to learn from his expertise in conservation science and biodiversity research.

The British Omani Society was delighted to host its Annual Summer Business Reception on Thursday 2 July, as part of our Golden Jubilee celebrations, bringing together government representatives, healthcare leaders, business executives and members of the UK and Omani communities.

We were honoured to welcome H.E. Dr Hilal bin Ali bin Hilal Al Sabti, Minister of Health of the Sultanate of Oman, as Guest of Honour. In his keynote address, he outlined Oman Vision 2040 priorities for the health sector, including healthcare innovation, digital transformation and AI, sustainable healthcare financing, and investment in human capital. He also highlighted the significant opportunities presented by the recently announced UK–GCC Free Trade Agreement, particularly in pharmaceutical manufacturing, scientific research, innovative medicines and digital health.

Richard Stanford, Chair of the British Omani Society, reflected on the Society’s 50-year history of strengthening UK–Oman collaboration and the growing opportunities for cooperation across business, skills, culture, the environment and future generations. Guests also heard remarks from the Hon. Saleh Al Zakwani, Chair of the Oman British Society, and Professor Anthony Harnden, Chair of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

Thank you to all our distinguished speakers, partners and guests for contributing to an evening of insightful discussions about expanding UK–Oman cooperation.

The British Omani Society was delighted to host the annual SAF Lecture, Field Surgical Team: A Reflective Perspective with Bill de Bass, who shared a fascinating and deeply personal account of his military medical career and service in Dhofar during a pivotal period in Oman's history. 💉

Drawing on his experiences with the British Army and his deployment to 55 Field Surgical Team in Salalah in 1972, Bill reflected on the realities of providing medical care in challenging and isolated conditions, and how his time in Dhofar became a truly life-changing experience.

Thank you to Bill for such an engaging and insightful presentation, and to all those who joined us in person and online for the discussion.

The UK’s agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council marks an important development in relations between Britain and Oman. 🇬🇧🇴🇲

According to preliminary estimates from the UK Department for Business and Trade, the agreement could add £3.7 billion to UK GDP each year in the long run, increase real wages by £1.9 billion annually, and raise total UK-GCC trade by 19.8%. 📈

For Oman and the UK, the agreement creates new opportunities to strengthen cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, clean energy, advanced manufacturing, digital services, logistics and healthcare. It is also intended to make it easier for businesses to trade across borders through tariff reductions, simpler customs procedures, improved business mobility and clearer rules for services and data flows.

The deal highlights the continued importance of the Oman-UK partnership and offers a framework for further collaboration. 🤝

Join us at Camels in a Cloud Forest: Pastoralism in the Dhofar Mountains, for a deep dive into the social drivers and ecological impacts of pastoralism in Oman’s Dhofar Mountains.
Dr Lawrence Ball will share new research on why pastoral traditions persist amid rapid change, and what extensive botanical surveys reveal about the fragility of Dhofar’s endemic cloud forests.
