The British Omani Society was delighted to host John Edwards for Mapping Oman: A Cartographer’s Journey Through the Hajar Mountains, a lecture exploring how modern hiking maps for Oman are created and why they matter.

John covered the use of publicly available topographic data, GPS tracks and OpenStreetMap, the process of transforming raw spatial data into clear, reliable maps, and the challenges of transliterating Arabic place names into English in collaboration with Omani institutions. John also highlighted how high‑quality mapping is supporting long‑distance walking and mountain communities across the Hajar range.

Thank you to all our members who attended, we look forward to welcoming you at our next lecture on the 18th June!

Happy World Heritage Day! 🏞️

Oman is home to some of the world’s most striking natural landscapes, a powerful reflection of the country’s rich cultural and environmental heritage. These photos, taken by Jack Ockenden during our 2025 Student Volunteer Oman Scheme (SVO), capture just a glimpse of that beauty.

Next month, we’ll be exploring one of Oman’s most remarkable regions in greater depth at our event, “Mapping Oman: A Cartographer’s Journey Through the Hajar Mountains.” John Edwards will share insights from his cartographic work and long experience navigating the Hajar, shedding light on how mapping supports access, understanding and the preservation of these extraordinary landscapes. 🏔️

Happy World Art Day! 🎨🎊

Art has an extraordinary ability to connect people across cultures. Our recent visit to Oman reminded us how creativity can open space for genuine cultural exchange. The experience created a space for artists to exchange ideas, explore new approaches and learn from one another. 💫

The Art Project was organised by BOS members Polly and Felix Gedney, with support from the British Embassy in Muscat and sponsorship from the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Youth. Thank you to all the talented artists who participated in this celebration of artistic exchange. 🤝
